Chapter 5 - Whispers in Neonatal

The neonatal intensive care unit was a cathedral of glass boxes and quiet, terrified parents. Julian stood outside incubator twelve, his hand pressed against the warm acrylic shield. Inside, swallowed by an oversized diaper and a maze of translucent monitoring leads, his newborn daughter rested. Her chest rose and fell in quick, bird-like flutters under the glow of the blue phototherapy lamps.
"Maya," he whispered against the plastic. "Your name is Maya."
She had Clara’s sharp chin and the same dark, sweeping lashes. Looking down at the fragile infant, the madness of the past two hours felt like an absurd nightmare. How could Clara—his gentle, soft-spoken wife who restored vintage books for a living—harbor secrets involving covert medical implants and ruthless women in red dresses?
His pocket vibrated. Julian reached in, pulling out the small brass key he had picked up from the hallway floor. The metal tag read: Locker 402 – St. Jude Lower Archive.
Behind him, soft footsteps approached. Julian turned, expecting Nurse Elena, but found an elderly man wearing a security uniform with an unbuttoned collar. The guard didn't look at Julian; he kept his eyes locked on the baby inside the incubator.
"She has the mark behind her left ear, doesn't she?" the guard said quietly, his voice raspy from decades of cheap tobacco.
Julian stepped defensively between the guard and the incubator. "What did you say?"

"Check her, son," the old man urged, his expression grim. "Before they come to collect her, look behind her ear."
