Chapter 6 - The Archive

Julian stared at the guard, but before he could demand an explanation, the old man turned and shuffled down the hall, disappearing through the heavy fire exit doors. Julian looked back at Maya. Slowly, gingerly, he slipped his sanitized hands through the rubber access ports of the incubator. His trembling fingertips gently supported his daughter’s tiny head, turning it slightly to the right. There, just beneath the hairline, was a faint, blueish discoloration—not a birthmark, but a deliberate, geometric tattoo no larger than a grain of rice.

A wave of cold dread washed over him. He pulled his hands back, his mind racing. Leaving Maya under the watch of the head nurse, Julian sprinted down the stairwells, skipping steps until he reached the windowless basement levels of the hospital where the air grew damp and smelled of neglected paper.

The archives were a labyrinth of rusted metal shelving units, lit only by flickering emergency bulbs. He followed the faded yellow signs until he found the bank of staff lockers marked with four-hundred-series numbers.

Julian jammed the key into Locker 402. The cylinder turned with a heavy, scraping grind. Inside sat an unsealed manila envelope and a portable external hard drive wrapped in a black cloth. He tore open the envelope. Inside were medical records dating back twenty-five years, carrying Clara’s maiden name—and a full psychological evaluation documenting an identity reconstruction program.

The last document was an adoption contract. At the bottom, Clara’s signature was missing, replaced by the signature of Dr. Rao.
