Chapter 15 - The Awakening

Thirty-six hours later, the sterile smell of antiseptic had returned, but the storm had washed the sky into a crisp, pale blue. Julian sat in a private isolation room in a rural clinic fifty miles north of the city, his left arm bound in a tight sling. In his right arm, he cradled Maya, who slept peacefully, oblivious to the violence that had heralded her entry into the world.
Across from him, surrounded by low-humming medical equipment, Clara lay on a narrow bed. The telemetry tracker had been surgically extracted by Rao in the dead of night, leaving only a small, bandaged incision. Her skin was no longer burning; her breathing was rhythmic and deep.
Dr. Rao stood by the window, watching the narrow country road below. "A transport vehicle will be here in twenty minutes. New identities, a quiet sanctuary in the mountains of Montreal. They won't find you there."
Julian nodded slowly, leaning down to press his lips against Maya’s warm forehead. "Thank you, Arthur."
Rao offered a rare, melancholic smile. "I was only keeping a promise made twenty-five years ago."
A faint rustle of cotton sheets broke the silence. Julian snapped his head toward the bed.
Clara’s eyelids fluttered, straining against the heavy medication. Her head turned slowly toward the sound of her daughter’s soft breathing. Her eyes opened, clear, bright, and deeply conscious for the first time in days.
"Julian..." she whispered, her cracked lips curving into the faintest smile as her gaze settled on the child in his arms. "You brought her back."
Julian stood up, stepping to her side and laying Maya gently against Clara’s chest. Tears tracked down his cheeks as Clara wrapped her weak, trembling arm around them both.

Then, Clara looked up at Julian, her expression suddenly stiffening with profound terror.
"Julian," she whispered, her voice trembling. "Where is my sister? If she knows... she won't be coming alone. She took our other child four years ago."
