Chapter 11 - The Skybridge

The skybridge was a glass corridor suspended five stories above the rain-slicked courtyard. Wind rattled the exterior steel braces, shrieking like a wounded animal. Halfway down the corridor stood two men in black tactical gear, their faces hidden behind dark visors, submachine guns slung across their chests.
Julian didn't slow down. Fueled by raw, primal desperation, he charged into the open corridor.
"Halt!" one of the guards shouted, reaching for his weapon.
Julian hurled the steel retractor with all his strength. The heavy metal tool struck the first guard squarely across the visor, shattering the plastic and sending him staggering backward into his partner. Julian closed the distance in three violent strides, tackling both men into the reinforced glass wall.
The glass spiderwebbed under the impact with a sickening crack. Julian grabbed the fallen guard's tactical baton, striking down hard across the second man’s collarbone until both mercenaries were crumpled on the linoleum, groaning and disarmed. Julian ripped a service sidearm from the first guard's holster, his hands steady despite never having held a gun before.

Through the fractured glass, he looked up at the roof of the adjacent tower. The helicopter's navigation lights cut through the rain. Climbing the exterior metal stairs toward the helipad was the woman in the red dress, holding a tightly wrapped bundle against her chest.
