Chapter 9: A Husband’s True Face

The distance between them felt charged with an electric, lethal tension. The amber glow of the highway neon flickered in the distance, casting long, erratic shadows across the gravel shoulder. David stood with his hand resting inside his jacket, his posture completely relaxed yet radiating an unmistakable predator's poise.

"You're running an operation out of my home," Elena said, her voice steady despite the adrenaline hammering through her veins. She kept her eyes locked on her husband, refusing to show the terror clawing at her chest. "Every charity gala, every massive floral display—it was all a cover to move children through the estate."

David let out a low, dry chuckle that held no humor whatsoever. He slowly withdrew his hand from his jacket, holding a sleek silver smartphone instead of a weapon, though the implication of his control remained absolute.

"Philanthropy is an expensive enterprise, Elena," David replied smoothly, taking a slow step forward. "Do you have any idea what it costs to maintain an estate of this scale? The taxes, the security, the investments required to keep our family name at the pinnacle of society? Traditional wealth doesn't cut it anymore. We provide a very exclusive service for very exclusive clients who value absolute discretion."

Leo whimpered behind Elena, his small fingers twisting frantically into the pink fabric of her dress. Baron let out a sharp bark, stepping forward aggressively, his massive chest rumbling with a warning that made David hesitate for a fraction of a second. The German shepherd's presence was the only thing keeping David at a cautious distance.

"And what about our child, David?" Elena asked, her voice cracking slightly with a mix of grief and fury. "Were you planning to monetize our baby too when the price was right?"

For the first time, a flicker of genuine irritation crossed David’s polished features. "Don't be absurd, Elena. Our child is blood. That's entirely different."

"Different?" Elena spat the word out like poison. "You treat human lives like commodities. You lock innocent children behind decorative walls while sipping champagne with local politicians. You are a monster hiding behind a tailored suit."

"And you are a stubborn woman who is about to ruin everything we've built," David snapped back, his smooth facade finally cracking under the weight of her defiance. He raised his phone, tapping the screen twice. "Security is sweeping the outer road right now. You can get in the car quietly, and we can discuss how to handle this privately, or you can make a scene that ends very badly for everyone involved."

From down the dark county road, the low rumble of a second vehicle engine grew audible, cutting through the night air with ominous speed. Headlights crested the distant hill, bathing the road in bright white light.

Elena’s heart raced. If it was more of David’s security detail, they were cornered with nowhere left to run. But as the vehicle drew closer, the distinctive red and blue flashing light bar mounted on the roof pierced the darkness.

State Police.
