Chapter 2: The Shattered Illusion

The terrifying plea hung in the cold ballroom air, vibrating against the crystal chandeliers long after the small boy stopped speaking. Elena remained frozen on her knees, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. The delicate pink fabric of her dress felt suddenly suffocating against her skin. She looked down at the child standing among the fallen petals. He was wearing an oversized, dirty gray t-shirt, his skin translucent under the harsh overhead lights, showing the faint outline of ribs beneath his collarbones.
Baron lowered himself back to all fours, letting out a low, protective huff as he nudged the boy's trembling knee with his bandaged leg. The boy flinched at first, unused to gentleness, then tentatively reached out to touch the thick fur behind the dog's ear.
"Who put you in there?" Elena asked softly, pitching her voice to a soothing register, careful not to startle him further. She slowly rose from the marble floor, wincing slightly as her lower back protested the sudden movement.
Before the child could answer, the sharp slap of running footsteps echoed from the vaulted hallway. Beatrice had recovered from her initial shock, her expression shifting from panic to calculated malice. She lunged forward, her black bow tie askew, and grabbed the boy roughly by his thin arm, yanking him backward toward the dark opening in the wall.
"You shouldn't have been looking," Beatrice hissed through clenched teeth, her professional facade entirely shattered, revealing a desperate cruelty beneath.
"Get your hands off him!" Elena shouted, stepping forward with an authority she did not entirely know she possessed. Her pregnant belly placed her at a physical disadvantage, but her gaze was fierce enough to make Beatrice hesitate for a single, crucial second.
Baron did not hesitate. With a deep, resonant growl that rattled the glass in the nearby windows, the massive German shepherd stepped directly between Beatrice and the child, lowering his head and baring his teeth. Beatrice gasped, releasing her grip on the boy and stumbling backward, her heels clicking frantically against the polished floor.
The boy scrambled behind the folds of Elena’s pink dress, burying his face in the soft fabric. His small frame was wracked with silent tremors. Elena placed a trembling hand on his matted hair, feeling the cold sweat dampening his scalp.

"Beatrice," Elena said, her voice dropping an octave into a dangerous calm. "Explain this right now, or I swear to God I will call the police and every media outlet in the state before you can take another breath."
Beatrice smoothed her white shirt with trembling fingers, her eyes darting toward the grand exit and back to Baron, who watched her every twitch with unblinking vigilance. The silence in the ballroom grew suffocating, broken only by the ragged breathing of the terrified child clinging desperately to Elena's skirt.
