Chapter 5: The Conservatory Escape

The damp, earthy smell of overgrown ferns and moss grew stronger as Elena pushed open the heavy glass door leading into the estate's disused Victorian conservatory. Moonlight filtered through the cracked, dirty panes of the vaulted glass ceiling, casting long, skeletal shadows across the mosaic tile floor. Dead leaves crunched beneath Elena’s sensible flats as she hurried Leo forward, keeping the boy pressed tightly against her side.

Baron moved like a phantom among the tangled vines and rusted iron plant stands, his ears twitching at every stray sound from the service wing behind them. The conservatory was a jungle of neglect, a forgotten relic of the estate's earlier, more genuine era before wealth and corruption hollowed it out from the inside.

"Keep moving, sweetie," Elena whispered, breathless, feeling a sharp cramp stitch across her lower abdomen. She placed a protective hand over her pregnant belly, willing her body to hold out just a little longer. The stress was taking a heavy physical toll, but adrenaline kept her moving forward.

At the far end of the conservatory stood a pair of French doors leading directly out to the perimeter hedge maze and the rusted secondary gate. Through the grimy glass, Elena could see the cool glow of the security lights sweeping across the gravel driveway beyond the fence. Salvation was tantalizingly close, yet guarded by the very system her husband commanded.

Suddenly, the heavy metal clatter of a security door slamming open echoed from the service hallway they had just vacated. Shouts reverberated through the ventilation shafts—low, urgent voices barking orders in clipped tones.

"They're in the south corridor! Check the conservatory perimeter!" a gruff voice called out, cutting through the cavernous gloom.

Leo let out a muffled gasp, stumbling over a thick exposed root snaking across the mosaic floor. Elena caught him by the shoulder just before he hit the ground, lifting him effortlessly into her arms despite her condition. He was shockingly light, a testament to months of malnourishment and isolation behind the floral wall.

"I've got you, Leo. We're almost out," she panted, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs.

They reached the French doors, and Elena threw her weight against the rusted brass handle. It groaned, resisting the initial push, then gave way with a loud, metallic crack that echoed sharply in the glass-domed room. Night air rushed in, crisp and sweet, carrying the scent of damp earth and distant pine trees.

Baron bounded out first, sniffing the perimeter grass before turning back to urge them forward with a soft whine. Elena stepped out into the moonlit courtyard, pulling Leo into the concealing shadows of the towering privet hedges just as the conservatory door swung open behind them, flooding the glass room with the harsh yellow beams of heavy flashlights.
