Chapter 12: Picking Up the Pieces

Three weeks had passed since the terrifying night at the estate, a period marked by endless federal depositions, media frenzies, and the quiet, steady work of healing. Elena had relocated to a modest, sunlit cottage on the outskirts of the county, far away from the oppressive, gilded walls of the Sterling manor. The property was surrounded by wild maple trees and a sprawling grassy yard where Baron could run freely without restriction.
Leo was staying in the guest room down the hall, slowly regaining his strength, his laughter echoing through the hallways—a sound that breathed genuine life back into the house. The dark, hollow look in his eyes had been replaced by a cautious, growing sense of security.
Elena sat in a comfortable rocking chair by the living room window, her hand resting gently on her heavily pregnant belly. The due date was now less than a month away, and despite the emotional turmoil she had endured, a deep, abiding peace had settled into her soul.
A sharp knock at the front door broke her reverie. She stood up slowly, smoothing her comfortable cotton sweater over her bump, and walked to the entryway.
Opening the door, she found Special Agent Vance standing on the porch holding a large manila envelope. His expression was serious, but carried a hint of professional satisfaction.
"Afternoon, Mrs. Sterling," Vance greeted respectfully, tipping his head. "I thought you'd want an update on the federal proceedings before the news breaks publicly tomorrow morning."
"Come in, Agent Vance," Elena said, stepping aside to let him into the warm, sunlit foyer.
They sat at the small wooden dining table while Leo played quietly with wooden blocks in the corner, with Baron resting his massive head across the boy's feet. Vance slid a stack of legal documents across the table.
"The grand jury handed down a formal indictment this morning," Vance explained. "David refused to cooperate, attempting to shift the blame onto his associates, but Beatrice cracked under questioning. She provided the encrypted passcodes to all their offshore accounts and communication networks. The entire network has been dismantled from coast to coast."
Elena looked over the summary pages, feeling the final knots of anxiety unspooling in her chest. "Will there be a lengthy trial?"
"Unlikely," Vance replied. "The physical and digital evidence recovered from the estate is airtight. They'll be pleading guilty to avoid maximum federal sentences. Your testimony won't even be required unless you wish to give a victim impact statement at sentencing."
Elena shook her head slowly. "I don't need to look at him ever again. My focus is moving forward."

Vance smiled faintly, gathering his papers. "You showed extraordinary courage that night, Mrs. Sterling. Not many people would have stood their ground against that kind of machinery."
"I wasn't going to let another innocent life be trapped behind a wall," Elena said simply.
