Chapter 13: A New Foundation

The morning sun poured through the wide bay windows of the cottage, painting the hardwood floors in warm, golden light. A soft knock sounded at the kitchen door, followed by the familiar, cheerful voice of social worker Sarah Jenkins, who had been overseeing Leo’s transition and temporary guardianship placement.
Elena poured a fresh cup of herbal tea as Sarah stepped into the kitchen, carrying a stack of official state paperwork wrapped in a bright blue ribbon.
"Good morning, Elena," Sarah greeted warmly, setting the papers on the wooden table before walking over to ruffle Leo’s hair as the boy sat at the counter drawing pictures with crayons. Leo grinned up at her, holding up a drawing of a large dog with a very thick bandage on its leg.
"Good morning, Sarah. Everything alright?" Elena asked, offering a cup of tea.
"More than alright," Sarah said, her eyes shining with quiet emotion. "The family court judge reviewed the permanent foster placement petition this morning. Given Leo’s recovery, your unwavering support, and the complete lack of any viable biological relatives coming forward, the court has officially approved your application for permanent guardianship."
Elena’s breath hitched in her throat. She looked down at Leo, who had stopped drawing, sensing the shift in the room's energy. His big, expressive eyes searched her face with a mixture of hope and lingering uncertainty.
"Does that mean... I get to stay here forever?" Leo asked softly, dropping his crayon.
Elena walked around the counter, kneeling beside his chair—just as she had knelt beside him on the cold marble floor weeks ago—and took his small hands in hers. Her eyes glistened with happy tears.
"Forever and always, Leo," Elena whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "You are never going back behind those walls."
Leo let out a joyful cry, throwing his arms around Elena’s neck and burying his face in her shoulder. Baron trotted over, resting his heavy chin on their knees and letting out a contented huff that made them both laugh through their happy tears.

Sarah smiled warmly, sipping her tea as she watched the embrace. "The state adoption finalization can proceed officially once your newborn arrives next month. You're going to be an incredible mother of two, Elena."
The dark chapter of the Sterling estate felt like a lifetime away, replaced by the simple, beautiful reality of a rebuilt family. The walls that had once concealed secrets and suffering had been torn down, and in their place, a genuine home had finally been built from the ground up.
