Chapter 6: Shadows in the Hedge Maze

The tangled maze of ancient privet hedges offered a chaotic network of twists and turns, casting deep, ink-black shadows under the pale moonlight. Elena clutched Leo tightly against her chest, her breathing ragged as she navigated the narrow gravel paths. Behind them, the sharp beam of a high-powered flashlight cut through the foliage, sweeping across the garden walls in an erratic dance.
"Over here! Check the north quadrant!" a deep voice shouted from near the conservatory doors.
Baron trotted a few paces ahead, turning his head frequently to ensure Elena and the boy were keeping pace. The massive German shepherd moved with astonishing stealth, his bandaged leg barely slowing his stride as he navigated the familiar layout of the estate's grounds.
Elena’s legs burned with fatigue, and every step sent a dull, throbbing ache radiating through her lower back. The weight of her pregnancy felt magnified a hundredfold under the intense physical stress, but fear acted as a relentless fuel, pushing her past her body's natural limits. She ducked beneath a low-hanging branch, shielding Leo’s head with her hand.
"Are we going to get caught?" Leo whispered, his voice trembling against her collarbone.
"No," Elena whispered back with a fierce conviction she didn't entirely feel. "We are going to find help. I promise you."
They rounded a sharp corner in the maze, entering a small dead-end alcove dominated by a stone fountain shaped like a weeping cherub. The water had long since been shut off, leaving the basin dry and filled with dead leaves. It wasn't an escape route, but it offered temporary cover as the sound of crunching gravel drew dangerously close.
"Spread out! She couldn't have gotten past the perimeter fence yet; the sensors haven't tripped," a voice barked, sounding frustratingly near.
Elena pressed herself flat against the damp stone wall of the fountain, pulling Leo down into a crouch beside her. Baron slipped into the deep shadows beneath the overhanging boxwood branches, his dark coat rendering him virtually invisible against the dark earth.
The beam of a flashlight swept across the entrance of their alcove, illuminating the swirling dust motes in the air. Elena held her breath, her hand covering Leo’s mouth to silence any accidental sound. For three agonizing seconds, the bright light hovered over the gravel just inches from their shoes, casting long, distorted shadows across the stone basin.
Then, a sharp whistle echoed from the opposite side of the maze. "Hey! I found fresh footprints near the gardener's shed!"

The flashlight beam jerked away, sweeping frantically back toward the east gardens. The heavy thud of tactical boots faded into the distance as the guards rushed off in the wrong direction.
Elena let out a shaky, shuddering breath, her knees weak as the immediate danger receded. They had bought themselves a few minutes, but the vast estate grounds were still a trap. They needed to reach the main highway, and the only way out was through the service tunnel beneath the old greenhouse.
