Chapter 6: A Fracture in the Family**

That evening, Eleanor found Arthur sitting in the dark of their bedroom, staring out the window at the manicured lawns below. She walked up behind him, resting her hands gently on his shoulders.

"Arthur, you haven't eaten, and you've barely spoken two words since you came back from town," she said softly. "The charity gala is in two days. People are expecting the annual announcement for the Sterling Foundation grants."

Arthur reached up, taking her hand. "Eleanor... how much of what we have is actually ours?"

She paused, sensing the gravity in his voice. "What happened, Arthur?"

He explained everything—the clinic, Dr. Green, the railway land, and the tape. As he spoke, Eleanor’s expression shifted from confusion to disbelief, and finally to deep anxiety.

"Arthur, that was twenty-five years ago," she whispered, pulling her hand back slightly. "You didn't do this. Your father did."

"Our foundation was funded with the profits from that land sale, Eleanor," Arthur said, turning to face her. "Every luxury we give Lily, every gala we host, came from crushing a man who was healing the poor."

"If you go public with this, the Sterling name will be ruined," Eleanor urged, her voice trembling. "The stock in the family company will crater. What will happen to Lily's future? To everything your family built?"

Arthur looked at the woman he loved, seeing the terror in her eyes. "If Lily grows up thinking that wealth matters more than human decency, then she won't have a future worth living anyway."
