Chapter 5: Whispers on Magnetic Tape**

They returned to the estate’s study, locking the door behind them. Julian found an old cassette deck in the storage closet and plugged it into the wall.

Arthur pressed *Play*.

The hiss of magnetic tape filled the quiet room, followed by the sound of coughing. Then, a voice came through the speaker—Charles Sterling, raspy and weakened by age, recorded shortly before his death.

*"If you are listening to this, Arthur... or Julian... then Marcus Green has found the courage to deliver what I could not."*

Arthur closed his eyes, his knuckles whitening against the armrest.

*"I told myself it was business. I told myself that the money I made from the rail expansion would fund foundations that would do greater good. But a lie dressed in gold is still a lie. Dr. Green spent his life serving those who had nothing, and I destroyed him because his honesty threatened my ambition."*

Charles paused on the recording, breathing heavily.

*"I hid the truth because I was terrified my sons would look at me with disgust. But dying with a spotless reputation is the greatest cowardice of all. The land trusts are still in my name. Fix what I broke. Don't let my greed become your legacy."*

The tape ended with a sharp click. Silence fell over the room like an iron curtain.

Julian looked at Arthur, tears welling in his eyes. "He knew. All these years, he knew, and he left the cleanup to us."

"No," Arthur said softly, staring at the empty tape player. "He gave us a choice to be better men than he was."
