Chapter 8

The heavy metallic thud of the electronic deadbolts slamming into place echoed through the soaring ceiling of the luxury lobby like distant thunder. The revolving glass doors instantly locked in place, and the heavy bronze fire shutters descended halfway down the main entrance, cutting off the street view outside. A low, synthetic security voice resonated from the overhead speakers, announcing in a calm, automated cadence: "Facility lockdown initiated. All exits sealed pending biometric authentication."
Marcus Sterling spun around, his polished leather shoes squeaking sharply against the marble as he lunged toward the elevator banks, furiously hammering the descent button with the palm of his hand. The indicator lights remained dead, the cabin doors refusing to budge an inch.
"What is the meaning of this?" Marcus roared, turning back to face Maya, his veneer of corporate invincibility completely shattered. "You have no legal authority to lock down a commercial hospitality facility without a formal unanimous vote from the board of directors!"
Maya didn't rush. She took two slow, measured steps toward him, her sneakers making barely a sound against the polished stone. She kept her hands inside her blue jeans pockets, her posture radiating an absolute, unshakeable confidence that made Marcus look like a cornered animal.
"Authority, Marcus?" Maya said softly, her voice carrying a chilling clarity. "You spent the last three months trying to bury my acquisition bids, leaking false valuations to the financial press, and attempting to quietly purchase my delinquent commercial properties behind my back. Did you really think I wouldn't secure controlling interest in the very venue where you planned to ambush the board tomorrow?"
Marcus’s face twisted into an ugly grimace, the mask of polite corporate rivalry completely dissolving into naked hostility. He gripped his thick leather briefcase tighter, his knuckles turning white.
"You think a few shares give you absolute control?" Marcus hissed, stepping toward her, though Agent Vance immediately moved forward, placing a heavy, warning hand on the butt of his hidden holster. Marcus stopped instantly, glaring daggers at the security operative before shifting his venomous gaze back to Maya. "The board doesn't want your aggressive restructuring plans. They want stability. They want someone who won't tear down decades of tradition just to prove a point."
"Tradition," Maya repeated, letting out a short, cold laugh. She glanced back at the front desk, where Derek and Chloe were literally trembling in terror, watching the titans clash. "You call systemic profiling, corporate espionage, and backroom extortion 'tradition'? Because that’s what your precious traditional management style has fostered right here in this lobby."
Marcus sneered, his eyes darting toward the front desk as if just noticing the two terrified receptionists for the first time. A flicker of panic crossed his features, though he masked it quickly. He realized that if Maya had been auditing the lobby's operational logs, she likely possessed the encrypted communications linking him directly to the discriminatory hiring practices enforced by the hotel staff.
"You're making a massive mistake, Maya," Marcus warned, his voice dropping to a low, venomous hiss. "If you try to execute that restructuring plan tomorrow, I'll release every single financial liability report your firm tried to bury last quarter. We sink together."
Maya smiled, a sharp, fearless expression that completely unnerved her rival. She reached into her brown leather shoulder bag, pulled out her smartphone, and tapped the screen twice.
Right on cue, the private security tablet in Agent Vance’s hand began to beep rhythmically, displaying a live decryption progress bar that was moving at lightning speed.

"You assume I tried to bury those liabilities, Marcus," Maya said, her voice steady and lethal. "When in reality, I was the one who manufactured them as bait."
Before Marcus could process the devastating implication of her words, the secure elevator shaft behind him gave a violent shudder, and the emergency service hatch on the ceiling slowly popped open with a loud metallic click.
