Chapter 1

The ambient hum of the grand hotel lobby felt heavy, saturated with the quiet luxury of polished marble pillars and glittering crystal chandeliers. Maya Richardson stood firmly at the front desk, her posture straight despite the hostility radiating from the staff. She wore a simple white shirt, classic blue jeans, clean sneakers, and carried a worn brown leather shoulder bag, her fingers lightly gripping her smartphone and physical ID card. Across the counter, Derek, the male receptionist, sneered openly, his tailored dark suit and tie contrasting sharply with his ugly expression.
Derek crossed his arms, leaning forward to look down his nose at her with unmistakable disdain.
"Look at yourself, Maya," Derek said, his voice dripping with venom and overt mockery. "This is a five-star hotel, not a shelter for people pretending they belong."
Maya did not flinch, nor did she let his cruel words pierce her composure. She maintained a steady gaze, lifting her phone and ID slightly higher to rest flat against the cool marble surface. Her breath was measured, deliberate, and entirely calm.
"My reservation is confirmed," Maya stated, her tone level, quiet, and cutting through the ambient noise of the lobby like a sharp blade.
Beside Derek, the female receptionist, whose name tag read Chloe, peered down at the ID card resting beside the smartphone on the glossy stone. Chloe wore a sleek dark blazer, her expression hardening into profound skepticism as she looked from the ID back to Maya’s casual attire.
Chloe sighed, turning her head slightly toward her colleague with an exaggerated, dismissive eye roll.
"Derek, come on," Chloe said, her voice dripping with condescension. "The real Maya Richardson would not walk in here dressed like she lost a fight with a thrift store."

Maya locked eyes with both of them, her dark eyes flashing with a sharp, determined light. She did not raise her voice, but the intense emotional tension in the luxury lobby was palpable. She slowly unlocked her smartphone screen, tapping a single notification that caused her phone to vibrate softly, revealing a private corporate portal that made Derek’s name tag suddenly catch his eye in an entirely different light.
Derek squinted at the glowing screen, his arrogant smirk instantly faltering as his eyes widened in sudden, pale terror.
