Chapter 10

The wailing sirens of the federal financial crime units grew deafeningly loud as a convoy of unmarked black SUVs slid aggressively to a halt right outside the revolving glass doors of the luxury hotel lobby. Flashing red and blue lights painted the pristine white marble pillars in an erratic, pulsing strobe effect, casting jagged shadows across the terrified faces of Derek and Chloe, who were still huddled helplessly behind the front desk.

The security shutters, which had been locked down tight just minutes before, began to mechanically grind upward, letting in the cool, damp night air along with the sharp crackle of police radios.

Marcus Sterling spun toward the entrance, his face completely drained of color. The armor of corporate invincibility he had worn for decades had officially evaporated, leaving him exposed to the harsh, unforgiving light of federal accountability. He looked back at Maya, his eyes wide with a desperate, pleading terror that he had never expected to feel in his entire life.

"Maya, please," Marcus whispered, his voice cracking violently as he took a half-step toward her. "You can't let them in here. If federal investigators seize these ledgers, the entire hospitality sector will take a catastrophic hit. Share prices will plummet across the board. We'll destroy billions in market value overnight!"

Maya did not flinch, nor did she offer a single ounce of sympathy. She stood tall and resolute, her white shirt and blue jeans catching the harsh red and blue strobe lights from the street outside.

"You should have thought about market value before you built your entire empire on corruption, extortion, and systemic discrimination," Maya replied, her voice cold, level, and entirely absolute.

Agent Vance gave a crisp nod, stepping toward the sliding glass doors as they fully retracted. Two federal agents in tactical windbreakers, badges gleaming brightly on their chests, strode briskly into the lobby, flanked by local cyber-crime investigators carrying high-tech digital extraction kits.

The lead federal investigator, a sharp-eyed woman with silver hair pulled back into a tight bun, bypassed the cowering receptionists entirely and walked straight up to Maya and Marcus. She didn't look at Marcus at first; instead, she offered a respectful, deferential nod to Maya Richardson.

"Ms. Richardson," the federal agent said formally. "We received your automated forensic payload. The secure data packet decrypted cleanly. We have everything we need."

Marcus let out a ragged, desperate breath, turning his head as if looking for an exit, only to find Agent Vance blocking the elevator banks and the emergency stairwells completely sealed off by tactical personnel.

"Mr. Sterling," the federal agent said, turning sharply to face him and pulling a pair of cold steel handcuffs from her tactical belt. "You are being placed under federal arrest for corporate wire fraud, securities manipulation, and systemic extortion."

Marcus opened his mouth to protest, to invoke his lawyers, to scream about his constitutional rights, but the words caught in his dry throat. He offered no physical resistance as the heavy steel cuffs clicked sharply around his wrists, biting cruelly into his skin as his arms were pulled firmly behind his back.

As the federal agents turned Marcus around to march him out toward the flashing convoy outside, his eyes locked onto Derek and Chloe behind the front desk one last time—a look of pure, unadulterated betrayal that mirrored the exact cruelty they had inflicted upon Maya just an hour earlier.

The heavy glass doors swung shut behind the departing federal convoy, plunging the lobby back into a tense, heavy silence, broken only by the sound of Derek sobbing softly into his hands behind the marble counter.

Maya turned slowly on her heel, her dark eyes shifting toward the terrified receptionists who were now the absolute last remnants of the toxic culture that had plagued the luxury hotel.
