Chapter 2

The sudden shift in Derek’s demeanor was almost comical if the situation had not been so deeply humiliating for him. His eyes darted from the glowing smartphone screen to Maya’s unyielding face, the color rapidly draining from his cheeks as his brain struggled to process the incoming data stream reflected in the glass. The corporate logo gleaming at the top of Maya’s screen was not just any corporate logo; it belonged to the venture capital firm that literally owned the controlling equity of the entire hotel chain.
Chloe, oblivious to the digital nightmare unfolding on the screen, continued tapping her polished fingernails against the front desk.
"Just escort her out, Derek," Chloe insisted, her tone dripping with impatience. "Security has already been notified. We don't need this kind of disruption ruining the afternoon tea service for our actual guests."
Maya lowered her phone just an inch, her expression remaining chillingly polite. She did not yell, nor did she make a scene, which only served to unnerve Derek further. She simply tilted her head, watching him sweat under the harsh glare of the crystal chandeliers.
"I believe my reservation requires the penthouse suite," Maya said smoothly, her voice carrying a quiet authority that commanded the entire space. "And I believe your manager needs to be made aware of how guests are being greeted at the front desk."
Derek swallowed hard, his Adam’s apple bobbing violently inside the tight collar of his white dress shirt. He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out, only a dry, desperate gasp of air. He knew that if Maya dialed the direct emergency board number displayed on her screen, his career in luxury hospitality would vanish in less than sixty seconds.
"Wait," Derek finally choked out, his voice cracking with panic. "Let's not be hasty, Ms. Richardson. There's been a slight misunderstanding."
"A misunderstanding," Maya repeated, her voice deadpan. "Is that what you call profiling someone based on what they choose to wear on a Tuesday afternoon?"
Before Derek could formulate a groveling apology, Chloe let out a sharp laugh, still entirely oblivious to the sinking ship she was standing on.

"Stop playing games with her, Derek," Chloe snapped, reaching across the counter to grab the phone. "Give me that. I'm calling the police myself."
As Chloe’s fingers grazed the edge of Maya’s smartphone, the device’s screen suddenly flashed red, sounding a low, secure corporate alarm that echoed ominously through the cavernous lobby.
