Chapter 7

The private elevator shaft let out a low, mechanical groan as the heavy counterweights shifted violently, hauling the high-speed cabin upward from the subterranean levels. The digital floor indicator mounted above the polished bronze doors rapidly flickered through the numbers: B3, B2, B1, Lobby. The rapid ascent sent a faint vibration through the marble floorboards, causing the crystal chandeliers overhead to sway ever so slightly in their gilded chains.

Arthur Vance gripped the edge of the front desk, his knuckles turning white as he stared at the descending floor numbers. "He's coming up directly to the main executive foyer. This is a restricted zone! He has no legal right to bypass the formal check-in protocol!"

Maya didn't flinch. She stood with her weight evenly distributed, her hands resting casually inside the pockets of her blue jeans, her brown leather shoulder bag slung securely across her chest. She looked less like a corporate investor ambushed in a luxury hotel and more like a grandmaster watching an opponent walk straight into a well-laid checkmate.

"Legal rights stopped mattering the moment Marcus decided to bypass the front gates," Maya said, her voice entirely devoid of fear. "He thinks he’s stepping into an empty building to intercept the physical records before the board meeting tomorrow. He has no idea we’re already here."

Derek and Chloe watched in stunned silence, completely forgotten in the escalating corporate war unfolding around them. The sheer scale of the power struggle dwarfed their petty, discriminatory behavior at the front desk. They realized with sinking horror that they were trapped in the middle of a billion-dollar boardroom war, and their jobs were the absolute least of their concerns.

The elevator chimes rang out with a sharp, metallic ping. The heavy bronze doors slid open smoothly.

Standing inside the lavishly paneled cabin was a tall, sharply dressed man in a charcoal bespoke suit, his silver-streaked hair slicked back with ruthless precision. Marcus Sterling stepped forward, a smug, triumphant smirk plastered across his face, holding a thick leather briefcase tightly in his left hand. He didn't even look at the front desk; he assumed the lobby was empty, save for the terrified hotel staff.

"Vance," Marcus called out, his voice dripping with condescension as he strode out of the elevator. "I trust the transfer protocols are—"

Marcus stopped dead in his tracks. His arrogant smirk froze, twisting into an expression of absolute shock as his eyes landed not on the panicked General Manager, but on Maya Richardson standing casually in the center of the lobby, arms crossed, staring directly at him.

Silence descended upon the grand lobby, heavy and suffocating. The crystal chandeliers seemed to dim in the sudden drop in atmospheric pressure.

Marcus slowly lowered his briefcase, his eyes darting from Maya to Agent Vance, and finally to the cowering receptionists behind the marble counter.

"Maya," Marcus managed to choke out, his voice losing its polished composure. "What... what are you doing here?"

May you like

Maya tilted her head, a cold, calculated smile touching her lips. "I live here, Marcus. At least, I do as of twenty minutes ago. Welcome to my hotel."

Marcus’s face flushed a deep, furious crimson as he realized he had walked straight into a trap. But before he could spin on his heel and smash the elevator call button, the secure tablet in Agent Vance’s hand chimed with a deafening triple-pulse, signaling that the entire building’s perimeter doors had just been automatically locked down by corporate command.
