Chapter 4

The General Manager, a man named Arthur Vance who prided himself on absolute operational perfection, looked like a man who had just witnessed his entire empire crumble into dust. He ignored Derek and Chloe completely, sliding past them with a look of sheer mortification as he stopped directly in front of Maya. Vance’s hands were slightly trembling as he clasped them together, bowing his head in a gesture of profound professional submission.

"Ms. Richardson," Vance said, his voice breathless and ragged. "I cannot express my deepest, most sincere apologies for this catastrophic oversight. The moment the priority override hit my terminal, I came running."

Derek’s jaw hit the marble floor. His mind raced frantically, trying to reconcile the disheveled-looking woman in the casual shirt with the mysterious principal investor who owned controlling shares in the luxury hotel chain. Chloe looked as though she had seen a ghost, her mouth opening and closing silently like a fish out of water as she processed the General Manager’s extreme deference.

Maya slowly adjusted the strap of her brown leather shoulder bag, her expression remaining entirely unreadable. She did not smile, nor did she offer any immediate comfort to the panicking hotel executive.

"Mr. Vance," Maya said, her tone level and chillingly polite. "It appears your front desk staff has a very specific screening process for who they believe belongs in this establishment."

Vance’s face contorted into a mask of pure fury as he slowly turned his head to glare at Derek and Chloe. The transformation in the General Manager’s demeanor was instantaneous; the polite, welcoming host vanished, replaced by an executive apex predator protecting his brand at all costs.

"What did you do?" Vance whispered, his voice dangerously low as he stepped around the counter to face the two receptionists.

Derek shrank back against the shelving unit, his hands raised defensively. "Mr. Vance, we didn't know! She didn't look like... she wasn't carrying luggage, and her clothes—"

"Silence!" Vance snapped, his voice cracking with suppressed rage. "You didn't look past your own arrogant prejudice to see who was standing right in front of you. Ms. Richardson is not just a guest; she is the lead architect of the restructuring initiative that funds your paychecks!"

Chloe felt the blood drain entirely from her face, her knees finally giving out as she grabbed the edge of the counter to keep from collapsing. The nightmare she had manufactured through casual cruelty had officially materialized in the worst possible way.

Maya stepped forward, placing her smartphone flat on the marble surface once more. She tapped the screen, projecting a holographic corporate document into the air between them, outlining every single performance review and customer service violation logged against Derek and Chloe over the past six months.

"Before we discuss my reservation in the penthouse," Maya said calmly, "I think we need to review your staff's termination paperwork."

Vance immediately nodded, pulling a sleek digital pen from his pocket and thrusting it toward Derek. But before Derek could reach for the pen, the heavy glass revolving doors of the hotel lobby spun open, admitting a towering, imposing figure in a dark trench coat who strode purposefully toward them, holding a secure encrypted tablet.
