Chapter 8: Inside the Lion’s Den

The master study was a monument to corporate hubris and solitary wealth. Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves lined the walls, interspersed with framed magazine covers featuring Julian receiving philanthropic awards. Moonlight poured through the expansive windows, casting long, sharp shadows across the polished hardwood floor.

Elena moved directly to the oversized executive desk in the center of the room. Her gloved fingers flew across the biometric panel embedded in the wood, searching for the hidden release latch Marcus had described. After a brief sweep along the underside of the mahogany ledge, her fingertips caught a small, spring-loaded toggle. With a soft click, a concealed drawer slid open smoothly from the side of the desk.

Inside lay a single, brushed-metal administrative key card, resting neatly beside a velvet-lined box containing spare cufflinks. Elena picked it up, feeling the cool metal against her gloved palm. This small piece of plastic was the key to unlocking the entire Sterling conspiracy—the tangible proof that could dismantle their empire of lies in a court of law.

Just as she lifted the key card, the faint sound of muffled footsteps echoed from the foyer. Elena froze, her breath catching in her throat. The charity gala hadn't ended yet; someone had returned early.

Panic threatened to overwhelm her, but she forced herself to remain completely still, blending into the shadows beside the towering bookshelf. The footsteps grew closer, accompanied by the familiar, low murmur of Julian’s voice speaking on a mobile phone.

"...I don't care what the lawyers say, make sure the injunction is filed by Monday morning," Julian’s voice echoed sharply as he strode into the hallway, tossing his suit jacket onto a nearby armchair. "I want full custody locked down before she has a chance to breathe."

Elena’s heart hammered furiously against her ribs. Julian was standing mere feet away from the study door. If he decided to check the room, she had nowhere to run. She gripped the metal key card tightly in her fist, her muscles coiled like a spring, ready to move at the slightest provocation.
