Chapter 10

The first pale rays of Sunday morning were just beginning to paint the Manhattan skyline in shades of bruised purple and gold as Elena and David parked their unmarked van in the underground loading bay of the Sterling Tower. Using Marcus’s administrative key card, they bypassed the primary freight checkpoint without raising a single automated flag.
The monolithic skyscraper was entirely silent, echoing with the sterile hum of central air conditioning and the distant, rhythmic dripping of a pipe somewhere in the basement levels. They took the private executive elevator directly to the forty-fifth floor, stepping out onto plush wool carpeting that muffled their footsteps completely.
Beatrice Sterling’s private office was a fortress of glass, mahogany, and intimidating corporate power. The walls were lined with historical photographs of the Sterling family standing alongside presidents and international dignitaries, all smiling with the practiced ease of people who believed they owned the world.
Elena walked straight to the executive mahogany desk where the master terminal sat flush against the wood. Her hands were remarkably steady now as she retrieved the flash drive Marcus had given her and inserted it into the hidden port beneath the monitor.
The screen flickered to life, bathing her face in a harsh blue luminescence. A complex command prompt appeared, scrolling lines of code across the display as David stood behind her, typing rapid sequences into a portable decryption pad.
"Firewall is resisting," David muttered, beads of sweat forming on his forehead. "They’ve updated their encryption protocols since Marcus retired."

"Find a way around it, David. We don't have much time," Elena urged, watching the security timer ticking down in the corner of the display.
With a sharp keystroke, David bypassed the primary authentication layer, and the directory of the private vault opened with a soft chime. Folder after folder of confidential records populated the screen—shell companies, offshore accounts, judicial payoffs, and, right at the center, the complete, unredacted trust ledger concerning Clara’s inheritance and the orchestrated campaign to strip Elena of her parental rights.
