Chapter 12

The descent down the stairwell felt like running through a nightmare. Sirens wailed in the distance outside the tower, and the flashing red strobe lights bled through the concrete stairwell windows, creating a surreal, nightmarish rhythm to their frantic escape.

When they burst out into the underground loading bay, their van was waiting, engine idling and exhaust pluming in the crisp morning air. David slammed the vehicle into gear the second Elena slammed the passenger door shut, tearing out of the subterranean garage just as three private security cruisers blocked the entrance ramp behind them.

"We’re clear!" David shouted, gripping the steering wheel so hard his knuckles turned white as they merged onto the empty highway leading out of the city.

Elena sat back in her seat, clutching her coat pocket where the micro-SD card rested safely against her chest. Her heart was pounding wildly, but a profound, unshakeable sense of calm settled over her spirit. The fear that had paralyzed her for months was entirely gone, replaced by the righteous fury of a mother defending her child against an empire built on corruption.

They drove straight back to Marcus’s townhouse, where the retired lawyer was waiting on the front porch with a cup of hot coffee in his hand, his face etched with unconcealed anxiety. As the van pulled up to the curb, Marcus rushed down the steps to open the door.

"Did you get it?" Marcus asked breathlessly.

Elena stepped out of the vehicle, pulling the micro-SD card from her pocket and holding it up in the morning light. "Everything. The financial fraud, the tax evasion, the medical conspiracy—all of it."

Marcus let out a long, shuddering sigh of relief, a rare smile breaking across his weathered face. "With this much evidence, the federal prosecutors won't just invalidate their custody claims. They’ll dismantle the entire Sterling Foundation from the top down."

Inside the house, Clara was awake, sitting at the kitchen table eating breakfast with the neighbor’s kind elderly wife. Seeing Elena walk through the door, the little girl dropped her spoon and ran straight into her arms, burying her face in Elena’s waist with a happy giggle. Elena scooped her up, kissing the top of her head as tears of pure relief finally spilled freely down her cheeks.
