Chapter 4

Leaving the diner behind, Elena drove deep into the historic district of the city, seeking out a figure from her past who understood the inner workings of the Sterling empire better than anyone else. Marcus Thorne had been the chief legal counsel for Sterling Global for over thirty years before suddenly retiring under mysterious circumstances two years ago. He was the only man Elena knew who possessed both a moral compass and intimate knowledge of Beatrice Sterling’s most closely guarded secrets.
The rain had reduced to a steady, misty drizzle as she parked her car two blocks away from Marcus’s modest brick townhouse. Tucking the brown envelope securely beneath her arm and holding Clara’s small, warm hand, she walked briskly up the concrete steps and pressed the brass doorbell.
Moments later, the heavy wooden door creaked open, revealing Marcus. His silver hair was disheveled, and he wore a faded cardigan over an open-collared shirt, looking every bit the weary retiree. Recognition flickered in his tired eyes, quickly replaced by genuine alarm as he looked from Elena’s strained face down to the trembling little girl clutching her skirt.
"Elena. Good God, what are you doing here?" Marcus whispered, glancing nervously up and down the quiet street before quickly pulling them inside out of the damp night air.
The interior of the house smelled of old books, pipe tobacco, and peppermint tea. Once they were settled in the cozy, book-lined study, Elena laid the brown envelope on the wooden coffee table and pushed it toward him. Marcus looked down at the documents, his expression darkening with every passing second as he flipped through the pages.
"I see Beatrice hasn't lost her touch," Marcus murmured grimly, shaking his head. "She's been setting this up since the day Clara was born. She never wanted you in the family, Elena. You represented an unpredictable element in a dynasty built on absolute control."

"Why, Marcus?" Elena asked, her voice tight with suppressed emotion. "What could they possibly gain by taking my daughter?"
Marcus looked up, his eyes heavy with sorrow. "It’s not just about Clara. It’s about the trust fund established by Beatrice’s late husband—a clause that requires direct maternal renunciation for the primary tranche of shares to vest into Julian’s sole control. They weren't just trying to take your daughter, Elena. They were erasing you to cash out."
