Chapter 2

The autumn rain began to fall in heavy, slate-gray sheets as Elena bolted past the stone fountains of the Sterling estate toward her vintage sedan. Every nerve ending in her body hummed with adrenaline. Clara whimpered softly against her collarbone, her small hands clutching the fabric of Elena’s dress.
"We're safe, sweetie. Mommy's right here," Elena murmured, her voice steady despite the chaos threatening to consume her. She unlocked the car door with a frantic click, sliding Clara safely into the backseat before strapping her in with trembling hands.
As Elena slid behind the steering wheel, she glanced back at the monolithic mansion looming behind them through the rain-streaked windshield. The warm lights of the conference room glowed ominously against the gathering dusk. Julian had not pursued them—at least not yet. The realization sent a cold shudder down her spine. Julian never backed down from a fight, especially when it came to corporate control and family assets. If he had stayed seated, frozen by her sudden violence, it meant the documents inside the brown envelope possessed an explosive power far beyond anything she had imagined.

With a deep breath to steady her nerves, Elena threw the car into reverse and navigated down the winding, gravel-paved driveway, leaving the iron gates of the estate behind. She drove aimlessly for miles, seeking the anonymity of a public diner off the interstate where the harsh fluorescent lights offered a strange kind of sanctuary.
Once parked in a secluded corner of the lot, Elena turned off the ignition and reached into her handbag. Her fingers brushed against the thick, textured paper of the brown envelope. She pulled it out slowly, the sound of the rain drumming against the car roof providing a muted soundtrack to her rising anxiety. The seal was already broken, the flap unsecured. With a hesitant breath, she reached inside and pulled out the crisp, folded sheets of heavy bond paper. The first page bore the official letterhead of Sterling Global Trust, dated just two days prior. As her eyes scanned the introductory paragraphs, the blood drained entirely from her face. The words blurred, reforming into a chilling reality that re-framed every single interaction she had ever shared with her husband and his ruthless grandmother.
