Chapter 9

Months passed, turning the crisp autumn air into the biting chill of winter, and then into the blossoming warmth of spring. The consultancy firm, now officially named Veritas Partners, had established a stellar reputation for uncovering financial discrepancies and guiding companies toward ethical governance. Elena’s name was no longer whispered in corporate corridors as an extension of Maddy’s shadow; she was recognized in her own right as a fierce, brilliant strategist.

One Tuesday afternoon, while reviewing a batch of incoming client files, Elena noticed a familiar surname on a folder submitted by a mid-sized real estate agency seeking an internal audit. Madison Holdings—or what was left of it. The firm had rebranded after the scandal, trying desperately to distance itself from Maddy’s disastrous tenure, but their current financial statements were riddled with the exact same vulnerabilities that Elena had spent years quietly patching.

She opened the file, tracing her finger down the columns of numbers. The structural flaws were glaring. Without someone constantly catching the oversights, the new leadership was steering the company straight toward another collapse.

Clara walked past her desk, pausing when she noticed the cover of the file. "Are you thinking of intervening?"

"No," Elena said immediately, closing the folder with a soft snap. "That bridge isn't just burned; it’s been paved over. Let them figure it out."

"It's just ironic," Clara mused, leaning against the edge of the desk. "He tried to drown you to keep his secrets safe, and now his whole world is sinking because he never learned how to swim without you."

"People rarely learn from being pushed," Elena said softly. "They only learn when they have to climb out on their own."
