Chapter 2

The interior of the grand estate was cool and hushed, a sharp contrast to the humid tension lingering by the pool. Elena walked across the imported hardwood floors, her wet footsteps leaving a distinct trail that wound through the sprawling living room and up the grand staircase. Every footstep felt symbolic, a reclamation of space that Maddy and his corporate associates had tried to strip away from her over years of quiet marginalization.

Inside the master suite, the lights were off, save for the pale moon filtering through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Elena stood before the massive walk-in closet, staring at rows of designer clothes that suddenly felt like costumes from a play she no longer wished to perform. She shed the ruined green satin dress, letting it pool on the floor like a discarded shell, and changed into a simple black cashmere sweater and tailored trousers. Her reflection in the full-length mirror showed a woman whose eyes held a fierce, calculated resolve.

There was no time for self-pity. Maddy had underestimated her intellect for the last time. For years, she had managed the operational logistics of his firm while he took the public bows, assuming her silence meant compliance. He had forgotten that the person holding the pen often knows more about the ink than the author.

A soft knock at the door broke her concentration. Elena did not turn immediately. "Come in," she said evenly.

The door clicked open, and Clara, the firm’s chief legal counsel and Elena’s closest confidant, stepped inside. Clara looked pale, clutching a leather briefcase tightly against her chest as if it were a shield. Her black evening gown rustled softly in the quiet room.

"Are you out of your mind?" Clara whispered, closing the door firmly behind her. "Doing that in front of everyone? The board members are panicking. Maddy is downstairs right now trying to spin it as a domestic dispute, but people saw the shove, Elena. They saw everything."

"Good," Elena replied, sitting down at the vanity table and beginning to brush out her damp hair with steady, rhythmic strokes. "Sunlight is the best disinfectant, Clara. Maddy wanted to make a public statement about power dynamics. I simply gave the audience a better plot twist."

Clara walked over, setting the briefcase on the edge of the bed and flipping the brass latches. "If we move now, we trigger the forensic audit. But it means freezing all corporate assets, including your personal accounts. You'll be locked out of everything."

"Let it all freeze," Elena said, her eyes meeting Clara's reflection in the mirror. "A clean slate is worth more than a comfortable cage. Open the files."
