Chapter 3

Morning arrived with a harsh, unyielding brightness that pierced through the heavy velvet drapes of the master suite. Elena was already awake, sitting at the mahogany desk by the window with a cup of black coffee, reviewing encrypted financial spreadsheets glowing softly on her laptop screen. The house was dead silent; Maddy had not returned to the bedroom the previous night, choosing instead to sleep in the guest wing downstairs, nursing his growing panic with scotch.

Downstairs, the echoes of yesterday's party felt like a distant nightmare, though the physical evidence remained. A stray champagne flute sat abandoned on the patio table; a few floating rose petals drifted aimlessly in the sparkling blue water of the pool. Elena closed her laptop with a soft click and walked down the sweeping staircase, dressed impeccably in a charcoal grey pantsuit that projected an impenetrable armor.

She found Maddy in the expansive kitchen. He was pouring a cup of black coffee with hands that visibly shook. The grey button-down from the night before was wrinkled, and dark circles bruised the skin beneath his eyes. He looked up as Elena entered, his defensive posture locking into place instantly.

"We need to talk," Maddy said, his voice raspy and stripped of its usual boardroom polish. "About last night. It got out of hand. I’m willing to issue a joint statement, say we had too much to drink, and move past it."

Elena poured herself a fresh glass of water, leaning against the marble kitchen island. She took her time before answering, letting the silence stretch until Maddy’s eyes flickered away in discomfort.

"There is no 'moving past it,' Maddy," she said calmly. "You made your choice clear by the pool. You wanted to establish dominance in public. I am going to respond with structure in private."

Maddy slammed his mug onto the counter, coffee sloshing over the rim. "You're threatening your own livelihood! Everything we built—this house, the investments, the social standing—it’s tied to my name. If you sink me, you sink with me."

"That is where you are fundamentally mistaken," Elena replied, her tone remaining completely level. "I didn't build my life on your name; I built it on your mistakes. And I kept an accurate journal of every single one."

Before Maddy could retort, the sharp chime of the doorbell echoed through the quiet house. Both of them froze. Elena didn't blink. She walked toward the grand foyer, leaving Maddy standing alone in the kitchen, a cold realization finally beginning to settle into his bones.
