Chapter 8

The loft quickly transformed from an empty shell into a vibrant, creative workspace. Elena spent the next month surrounded by moving boxes, paint swatches, and architectural blueprints. Rather than returning to the cutthroat world of corporate finance, she decided to channel her expertise into something she had secretly dreamed of for years: an independent consultancy firm dedicated to ethical auditing and mentorship for female-led startups.

She hired three brilliant young analysts who had been overlooked by the old guard at Madison Tower—sharp, ambitious women who possessed immense talent but lacked the institutional protection to thrive. Working alongside them in the sunlit loft felt less like a job and more like a collective awakening. Every document they reviewed, every strategy they formulated, was built on transparency and mutual respect.

One afternoon, as Elena was reviewing a business plan for a sustainable tech startup, Clara walked into the loft carrying two cups of artisan coffee. She set one down on the wooden desk, looking around the bustling room with an approving nod.

"You know, watching you run this place is terrifying," Clara remarked with a faint smile, taking a sip of her coffee. "You’re working harder now than you ever did for Maddy."

"There is a fundamental difference, Clara," Elena said, looking up from her screen. "Before, I was building a shield to protect someone else's ego. Now, I'm building a foundation that actually stands on its own."

"Have you heard anything about Maddy?" Clara asked, her tone shifting slightly.

Elena paused, shaking her head. "Not a word. Last I heard, he sold the estate and moved out of state. Without the network and the money to prop up his lifestyle, he apparently couldn't maintain the illusion."

"It's a heavy fall when you realize your entire identity was rented," Clara said quietly.

"Indeed," Elena replied, turning her gaze back toward the tall windows where the afternoon sun warmed the wooden floorboards. "Which is why we make sure everyone here owns their own name."
