Chapter 6

The sun dipped below the skyline, casting long, bruised shadows across the empty office. Maddy sat in his high-backed leather chair, the room around him stripped bare of personal belongings. The framed photographs, the expensive fountain pens, the antique desk clock—all packed neatly into two cardboard boxes sitting by the door. The corporate world he had spent a lifetime manipulating had discarded him in less than forty minutes.
The heavy glass door clicked open, and Elena stepped inside. She didn't look triumphant; her expression was calm, almost melancholic, as she surveyed the hollowed-out office.
"Are you here to gloat?" Maddy asked without looking up, staring blankly at the polished mahogany surface of the desk where he had orchestrated so many deals.
"No," Elena said quietly, walking over to the window and looking out at the glittering lights of the city below. "Gloat implies I take joy in this. I don't, Maddy. I just wanted the truth to exist outside of your head."
Maddy let out a bitter, dry laugh. "You destroyed everything we built. Ten years of work, gone in an afternoon."
"We didn't build this, Maddy. You built a house of cards on top of my labor, and you spent every day making sure I remained invisible so you could take the credit," Elena said, turning to face him. "The moment you pushed me into that pool last night, you thought you were asserting power. But all you did was wake me up."
Maddy finally looked up, his eyes bloodshot and desperate. "What am I supposed to do now? The board is blacklisting me. No firm in the city will touch me after a fraud investigation."
"You'll do what millions of people do when they lose their illusions," Elena replied evenly. "You'll start over honestly. Or you won't. That part is entirely up to you."
She placed a single manila folder on the edge of the desk. "Inside is an agreement. If you sign over your remaining residential shares without contesting the freeze, the civil litigation regarding the embezzlement will be kept private. You get your freedom; the firm gets its dignity back."

Maddy stared at the folder as if it were a loaded weapon. He picked up a pen, his hand shaking slightly, and scribbled his signature across the bottom line without reading another word. The fight had entirely drained out of him.
Elena picked up the signed document, checking the signature before sliding it into her own folder. She turned toward the door, pausing for a brief second before stepping out into the hallway, leaving Maddy alone in the dark.
