Chapter 6

Julian stepped into the cramped living room, his tall frame making the small apartment feel even cozier. He placed the box of pastries on the kitchen table, offering a warm, reassuring smile to Mateo, who stood frozen in absolute awe.

"I hope I’m not intruding at such a late hour," Julian said smoothly, his deep voice carrying an effortless grace that immediately put the mother and son at ease. "I was in the neighborhood reviewing some site plans for the new downtown facility, and I wanted to ensure that the transition paperwork arrived safely without getting lost in bureaucratic mail."

"Not at all, Mr. Vance," Elena said quickly, gesturing toward the small sofa. "Please, sit down. Let me get you a cup of coffee or some water."

"Water will be fine, thank you, Elena," Julian replied, taking a seat while Mateo quietly slid back into his chair, unable to take his eyes off the man who had completely altered the trajectory of their lives.

Julian accepted the glass of water Elena handed him, taking a slow sip before addressing the elephant in the room. "I wanted to check on you both personally. High-profile legal battles have a way of lingering in the news cycle, and I wanted to ensure that neither Victoria’s remaining associates nor aggressive reporters have attempted to contact you."

"No one has come by," Elena answered honestly, sitting across from him. "The neighborhood is quiet, and your security team made sure our phone number was unlisted. But Mr. Vance... I still find it hard to comprehend why you went to such extraordinary lengths for me. You didn't even know who I was before that night in Aspen."

Julian set the glass down on the wooden coffee table, his gaze turning serious and reflective. "Justice isn't about knowing someone personally, Elena. It's about recognizing when the scales of power are being used to crush someone who cannot fight back. My father taught me that a man's true character is measured entirely by how he treats those who can offer him nothing in return. Victoria Sinclair had wealth, influence, and privilege, yet she used all of them to abuse a vulnerable human being. Letting her get away with that would have made me complicit."

Mateo leaned forward, his youthful idealism shining through his dark eyes. "My history teacher always says that power corrupts absolute, but watching what you did... maybe power can be used to fix things, too."

Julian looked at the boy, recognizing the sharp intelligence burning behind his gaze. "Power is just a tool, Mateo. It’s a hammer. You can use it to build a house, or you can use it to smash someone’s skull. The choice of what to build—or destroy—belongs entirely to the person holding the handle."
