Chapter 13

Later that evening, after Mateo had retired to his room to work on his coding projects, Elena and Julian sat quietly on the balcony overlooking the park, sipping herbal tea in the cool mountain breeze. The city lights twinkled in the distance like a field of fallen stars, casting a gentle glow across their faces.

"You know," Elena said softly, breaking the comfortable silence, "for a long time after that night in Aspen, I believed that people with money and power lived by an entirely different set of rules—rules that meant people like me were just pieces on a chessboard to be sacrificed whenever things got difficult."

Julian turned his head to look at her, his expression serious and attentive. "Most people with power do operate that way, Elena. They view privilege as an entitlement to immunity rather than a responsibility to protect."

"And yet, you didn't," she said, her brown eyes searching his face. "Why? What made you stop and look at the security footage instead of just accepting the narrative everyone else was shouting?"

Julian looked down at his teacup, watching the steam rise into the night air before answering. "Because my father spent my entire childhood teaching me one fundamental truth: when you hold all the cards, you have a moral obligation to ensure the game isn't rigged against the people who have nothing left to lose. I saw fear in your eyes that night, Elena—not guilt. And I saw desperation in Victoria's. Once you learn to read human micro-expressions, deception becomes as loud as a siren."

Elena reached across the small table, resting her hand gently over his. "You saved my life, Julian. Not just my job, or my dignity, but my son's future. I don't think I'll ever be able to thank you enough for that."

Julian turned his hand over, clasping her fingers firmly. "You already thanked me, Elena. Every time I see you walk through the doors of Vance Capital with your head held high, proving every cynic wrong—that is the only thank-you I will ever need."
