Chapter 4

Deep within the steel-and-glass tower of Vance Capital in downtown Denver, the morning sunlight struggled to pierce through a thick layer of mountain fog. Julian sat behind his massive mahogany desk, reviewing the comprehensive financial audit of Victoria Sinclair’s defunct lifestyle corporation. The documents confirmed every suspicion he had harbored during the gala. Victoria was not merely a socialite in distress; she was the mastermind behind a complex web of fraudulent insurance claims and shell companies designed to bleed her wealthy acquaintances dry.
The heavy oak door swung open without a knock, and Marcus Vance, Julian’s older brother and managing partner of the firm, strode into the office. Marcus looked exhausted, his tie loosened and his grey suit jacket slung over one shoulder. He tossed a fresh printout of local morning headlines onto Julian’s desk. The bold front-page story screamed: HIGH SOCIETY FRAUD: SOCIALITE VICTORIA SINCLAIR ARRESTED AT CHARITY GALA.
"You went too public with this, Julian," Marcus said, running a hand through his dark, slicked hair. "The board is nervous. Victoria’s husband, Arthur Sinclair, is a major stakeholder in our green-energy portfolio. By putting Victoria behind bars, you’ve initiated a corporate war we didn't need right now."
Julian did not look up from the financial ledgers. He turned a page slowly, letting the silence stretch between them. "Arthur Sinclair knew about her fraudulent schemes, Marcus. He was funneling money through her shell accounts to hide his own embezzlement. If we hadn't exposed her at the gala, federal regulators would have frozen our shared assets by the end of the week."
Marcus stopped pacing, his expression tightening. "You knew about Arthur?"
"I know everything that passes through this firm," Julian said calmly, finally raising his eyes to meet his brother's. "We built this company on transparency and unyielding integrity. The moment we start covering up crimes for our stakeholders to protect quarterly earnings, we become no better than the criminals we put away. Victoria tried to ruin an innocent working mother to save her own skin. That crosses every ethical boundary I swore to uphold."
"And the maid?" Marcus asked, his voice dropping defensively. "What happens to her now? We can't just hand out settlements to every service worker who gets caught in the crossfire of high-society drama."

"Elena Flores is not just a footnote, Marcus," Julian said, his voice hardening with authority. "She is a mother, a hardworking citizen, and a victim of a targeted malicious prosecution. I have already arranged for Vance Capital’s foundation to cover her son’s college tuition in full, and we are retaining her as head of facilities management for our corporate headquarters with a triple-tier salary."
Marcus stared at his brother, recognizing the unyielding stubbornness in his gaze. He knew there was no arguing with Julian once his moral compass locked onto a target. With a heavy sigh, Marcus picked up his jacket, muttered a warning about watching their corporate flanks, and walked out of the office, leaving Julian alone with the ghosts of Aspen's ruined elite.
