Chapter 2

As the shockwaves of Julian’s revelation rippled through the ballroom, the murmurs of the wealthy elite turned from sympathetic outrage toward Victoria into a collective, predatory hum. People who had smiled in Victoria’s face for years now stepped backward, creating a visible perimeter of cold isolation around her trembling red gown. Julian ignored the surrounding social vultures, keeping his focus entirely on Elena. He gently placed the diamond necklace into the soft leather pouch he carried, securing vital evidence before anyone could interfere or demand a superficial reconciliation to save face.
"Mr. Vance, this is entirely a misunderstanding," Victoria finally managed, her voice pitched higher than intended, betraying the panic tearing at her composure. "The bag... someone must have planted it there to frame me. You know how these staff members talk among themselves, always conspiring—"
"Stop talking, Victoria," Julian interrupted coldly, taking a measured step forward. "Every word you add only digs the trench deeper. I watched you drop that bag behind the service cart while pretending to adjust your shawl. The security cameras outside the terrace doors recorded the entire sequence twice. There is no conspiracy here, only your desperate attempt to scapegoat an innocent woman to cover up your own financial ruin."
Elena gasped softly, pressing a calloused hand to her chest. She had suspected for weeks that Victoria despised her, but she never imagined the depths of cruelty the wealthy woman was capable of sinking to. Elena was a single mother working three jobs just to keep her teenage son, Mateo, enrolled in high school. A theft charge would have stripped her of her cleaning license, blacklisted her across the entire county, and destroyed her family's fragile survival.

Julian turned to the venue manager, who stood nervously near the double doors, clutching a clipboard like a shield. "Call the local precinct, Frank. Not for Elena. For Victoria Sinclair. We are filing formal charges of filing a false police report, attempted extortion, and malicious defamation."
Victoria staggered backward, her expensive stiletto catching on the hem of her gown. The reality of her downfall struck her with physical force. Her high-society standing, her credit lines, and her carefully curated marriage to an absentee banking executive were evaporating in real time. She cast a desperate glance around the room, but every face was averted, refusing to meet her gaze. The glittering velvet curtain of Aspen wealth had dropped, exposing the ruthless emptiness beneath.
