Chapter 7 - The Hidden Safe

The panic that suddenly flooded Victoria’s veins felt entirely foreign to her. For years, she had prided herself on being the cold, calculated legal mind who could dismantle any corporate adversary with a flick of her pen. But Eleanor’s parting threat, combined with ten-year-old Leo’s chilling revelation, made her realize that arresting the matriarch was only the opening skirmish of a much larger, darker war.

"What safe, Leo?" Victoria asked, her voice dropping to an urgent whisper as she grabbed the boy gently by his shoulders. "What is upstairs?"

Leo swallowed hard, his eyes reflecting the flickering glow of the dying chandelier lights. "I... I brought her a glass of water to her private study earlier tonight. The door was cracked open. I saw her opening a hidden wall panel behind the heavy mahogany bookshelf. She pulled out a stack of old files and a black wooden box before she heard me and... and hit me."

The red mark on Leo's cheek pulsed like a fresh brand. Victoria’s jaw clenched so tightly her teeth ached. She stood up quickly, making a split-second decision that could alter the course of her entire career and safety. The police had taken Eleanor away, but the Sterling estate was a labyrinth of hidden passages, locked rooms, and decades of buried corruption. If Eleanor had left behind evidence of something even darker, someone else in the family—or a loyal associate—might try to destroy it before a search warrant could be executed.

"Stay here," Victoria instructed the two children, her tone firm yet laced with undeniable urgency. She looked across the empty ballroom toward the catering staff huddled by the kitchen doors. "You two, watch them. If anyone comes near these kids, scream."

Victoria turned on her heel and strode rapidly toward the grand staircase. Her navy blue heels clicked furiously against the polished wood of the steps as she ascended into the dimly lit upper levels of the sprawling estate. The ambient noise of the party downstairs faded away completely, replaced by an oppressive, heavy silence that felt entirely unnatural.

The private residential wing smelled of expensive old books, heavy perfume, and lingering dread. Victoria navigated the winding corridors from memory, finally reaching Eleanor’s heavily fortified private study at the very end of the hall.

The massive mahogany door was unlocked, pushed open just a fraction of an inch. A thin sliver of pale moonlight cut across the dark hardwood floor inside.

Victoria reached out, her fingers trembling slightly as she pushed the heavy door open wider. The room was bathed in shadows, the massive mahogany desk looming like a monolith in the center. But it wasn't the desk that made Victoria’s breath catch violently in her throat.

The heavy bookshelf behind the desk had been swung wide open, revealing a gaping black cavity in the reinforced concrete wall. And standing directly in front of the open safe, frantically rifling through a stack of yellowed documents, was a familiar figure who should have been miles away.

Victoria froze in the doorway, her blood turning to ice water as the figure slowly turned around to face her.
