Chapter 6 - The Fall Of The Queen

The cold metal click of handcuffs echoing through the grand ballroom sounded like a death knell for the Sterling dynasty. Two police officers flanked Eleanor Sterling, their hands firmly gripping the arms of the once-untouchable matriarch. She did not go quietly; her expensive beige evening dress swirled around her ankles as she violently thrashed against the restraints, her face twisted in a mask of primal fury.

"Unhand me, you insolent fools!" Eleanor shrieked, her voice losing every shred of its former aristocratic elegance, shattering into a shrill, desperate scream. "Do you have any idea who I am? I own half the judges in this city! You will regret this before the night is over!"

The lead detective merely looked unimpressed, holding up a transparent evidence bag containing the spilled tiara, pearl necklace, and scattered rings. "Mrs. Sterling, anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. Let's walk."

The wealthy socialites pressed themselves tightly against the gilded walls, desperately avoiding eye contact as the woman who had ruled their social circle for decades was hauled away in disgrace. Flashbulbs from hidden paparazzi phones suddenly illuminated the dark windows—someone in the crowd had already leaked the scandal to the press. The empire was not just crumbling; it was being broadcast live to millions of viewers across the country.

Victoria slowly released her fierce embrace of the two children, though she kept one protective hand resting firmly on Leo’s uninjured shoulder. She stood up, smoothing down the front of her navy blue pantsuit, watching without a single ounce of pity as Eleanor was dragged past the massive crystal chandeliers that had illuminated her tyranny for so many years.

Just before reaching the grand doors, Eleanor violently twisted her head around, her eyes locking onto Victoria with a venomous, chilling glare.

"You think you've won?" Eleanor hissed, her voice dripping with a dark, terrifying promise that made the hair on the back of Victoria's neck stand up. "You think destroying me saves those brats? You don't even know what I buried beneath the foundation of this house. You just opened a Pandora's box that will destroy us all."

The heavy oak doors slammed shut behind the departing officers and their prisoner, cutting off the matriarch's mad laughter.

The ballroom descended into an eerie, suffocating quiet. The elite guests began to silently scatter toward the side exits like rats abandoning a sinking ship, eager to distance themselves from the radioactive scandal.

Victoria let out a long, shuddering breath, the immense tension finally draining from her shoulders. She looked down at Leo, whose ten-year-old face was still marred by the ugly red handprint, his dark eyes wide and processing far too much trauma for a child his age.

"Are you okay?" Victoria asked softly, kneeling down again.

Leo stared past Victoria, his small hand slowly rising to point toward the grand staircase leading to the dark, private residential quarters upstairs.

"She has another key," Leo whispered, his voice trembling uncontrollably. "In her desk upstairs. The key to the safe where the real secret is kept."
