Chapter 5 - Sirens In The Night

The faint, rhythmic wail of approaching police sirens cut through the crisp New York night air, echoing faintly against the thick glass windows of the grand ballroom. Inside, the atmosphere was thick enough to cut with a knife. The glittering crowd of elite socialites had retreated several paces, forming a wide, protective circle around the perimeter of the room, effectively turning the center into a modern-day colosseum. Nobody wanted to be associated with Eleanor Sterling anymore; survival in high society meant cutting ties the exact second a titan fell.
Eleanor stood frozen against the heavy marble pillar, her expensive beige evening dress looking like a shroud around her rigid frame. Her eyes darted wildly toward the massive mahogany double doors, desperately seeking an escape route that no longer existed.
"You called the police?" Eleanor whispered, her voice cracking with pure venom and disbelief. "You brought the authorities into my home? Have you completely lost your mind, Victoria? You are destroying the Sterling name!"
"The Sterling name was rotted from the inside out long before I got here," Victoria replied smoothly, her posture remaining perfectly composed as she stood her ground. "You built this entire dynasty on intimidation, deceit, and the systematic destruction of anyone who got in your way. Tonight, your reign of terror finally meets reality."
Victoria turned her attention away from the trembling matriarch for a brief moment. She knelt down on the cold marble floor, ignoring the dirt and the scattered jewelry, to bring herself down to eye level with ten-year-old Leo and his trembling little sister. The harsh red handprint on the boy's cheek seemed to glow under the chandelier light, a silent testimony to the cruelty they had endured. Victoria’s fierce, impenetrable expression melted into something deeply tender and heartbreakingly protective.
She reached out, gently pulling both children into her arms, wrapping them in a fierce, unbreakable hug that shielded them from the staring crowd. Leo buried his face into the shoulder of the navy blue suit, his little body trembling as the adrenaline finally began to wear off. His sister clutched the fabric of Victoria’s sleeve like a lifeline.
Victoria stared intensely past the children's shoulders, locking her unwavering gaze directly onto Eleanor standing in the background.
"Now," Victoria whispered fiercely, her voice carrying a chilling weight that made the older woman flinch. "Now tell everyone who the thief really is."
Eleanor’s chest heaved violently as she fought for breath. Her manicured hands gripped the edge of the marble pillar so hard her knuckles turned stark white. She glared at Victoria with enough hatred to kill, refusing to utter a single word of confession. The heavy oak doors at the end of the ballroom groaned loudly as they were pushed wide open.
Heavy, synchronized footsteps announced the arrival of uniformed New York City police officers, led by a stern-faced detective whose badge glinted under the crystal lights.
The lead detective stepped into the room, his eyes scanning the spilled jewelry on the floor before locking directly onto the trembling matriarch.

"Eleanor Sterling?" the detective called out, his deep voice silencing the entire room. "Step away from the wall. You are under arrest for grand larceny and filing a false police report."
