Chapter 3 - The Cold Stare Of The Outsider

Victoria’s heels clicked sharply against the marble floor, a rhythmic countdown of impending doom that echoed off the gilded walls. The high-society guests parted instantly, desperate to clear a path and distance themselves from the brewing storm. Victoria did not look at the wealthy socialites whispering behind crystal flutes of champagne. Her razor-sharp gaze remained locked entirely on Eleanor Sterling, whose grip on the terrified six-year-old girl finally faltered under the intense scrutiny.

"Victoria," Eleanor managed to choke out, her voice losing its previous venom and replaced by a brittle, defensive edge. "This is a private family matter. These ungrateful brats crossed a line, and I am merely handling the discipline."

"Discipline?" Victoria repeated, her tone dripping with absolute sarcasm as she closed the remaining distance. "Stealing is a crime, Eleanor, but false imprisonment and child abuse are felonies. Let go of her right now."

Victoria stopped just inches away from the matriarch. The height difference was negligible, but Victoria’s aura of absolute control completely overshadowed the older woman. The blonde woman in the blue suit cast a fleeting, deeply protective glance down at Leo and his weeping sister. The sight of the angry red handprint blooming across the ten-year-old boy’s cheek made Victoria’s jaw tighten so hard that a muscle pulsed violently in her cheek. She took a slow, deliberate breath, reigning in an explosion of rage that had been simmering for years.

"They didn't steal anything," Victoria stated loudly, her voice carrying effortlessly across the cavernous ballroom, ensuring every single affluent guest heard every word. "And you know it better than anyone, Eleanor."

Eleanor sneered, attempting to recover her ruined dignity by adjusting the front of her beige evening dress. "You always were an emotional liability, Victoria. Bringing outsiders into my home and letting them run wild. That diamond tiara was insured for two million dollars, and it vanished from my private suite upstairs. Only these two were wandering the private corridors."

"Are you entirely sure they were the only ones?" Victoria challenged, a dangerous, knowing smile playing at the corner of her lips.

The atmosphere in the room shifted instantly from uncomfortable shock to suffocating suspense. The guests leaned in, hanging on every syllable. Eleanor’s eyes darted nervously toward the grand staircase behind the ballroom, a microscopic twitch of panic that did not escape Victoria’s hawk-like observation.

"I searched their pockets," Eleanor snapped defensively, though a bead of cold sweat now trickled down her powdered neck. "They are filthy little thieves."

"Pockets can be emptied," Victoria replied coldly, her hand slowly sliding inside her navy blue jacket. "But greed always leaves a trail."

Victoria pulled her hand out, clutching a glittering, gold clutch purse by its delicate chain. The exact purse Eleanor had been frantically guarding all evening.

Eleanor gasped, taking a sudden, involuntary step backward, her hands trembling violently as she stared at the gold purse dangling from Victoria's fingers.
