Chapter 13 - The Betrayal In Uniform

The cold black barrel of Detective Miller’s service weapon gleamed menacingly under the flickering warehouse lights. The three accompanying officers fanned out quickly, their boots crunching loudly on the gravel-strewn concrete floor as they surrounded Victoria in a tight, inescapable tactical formation.

"Detective Miller," Victoria said, keeping her voice carefully regulated despite the chaotic adrenaline storm raging inside her chest. She kept her hands visibly away from her pockets, refusing to make any sudden movements that could give them an excuse to open fire. "You are making a massive mistake. Look up at the catwalk—there is an armed operative up there working directly with the Sterling family."

Detective Miller didn't even bother looking up. He took two slow, calculated steps forward, his expression carved from stone. He holstered his gun, but the cold, predatory smirk on his face was far more terrifying than the weapon.

"There is no operative up there, Victoria," Detective Miller said smoothly, his voice dripping with condescension. "You’ve been working overtime under a lot of stress. All I see is a corrupt corporate lawyer caught red-handed fleeing an estate with stolen confidential documents."

Victoria’s gaze snapped back toward the metal catwalk. The masked man in the trench coat was completely gone. The upper platform was utterly empty, the shadows swallowing any trace of his existence. He had vanished like a ghost, leaving her holding the smoking gun of an impeccably executed framing.

"You're on their payroll," Victoria whispered, the terrifying puzzle finally clicking into place in her mind. "Eleanor and Arthur didn't just buy judges. They bought the entire precinct. Every missing person report, every suspicious car crash... you helped them bury it all."

Detective Miller chuckled, a harsh, grating sound. "The Sterlings pay very well, counselor. And they take care of people who are loyal. But you? You got too greedy, too curious, and you tried to play a game you didn't understand. Now, hand over that manila folder."

Victoria tightened her grip on the thick cardboard folder hidden against her chest. Her mind raced at hyper-speed, calculating every possible angle of escape. The heavy metal exit doors were blocked by three armed officers. The windows were too high to reach. There was no backup coming; ten-year-old Leo and his little sister were sitting miles away in a parked car, completely unaware that she was about to be swallowed up by a corrupt justice system from which she would never return.

"I won't give it to you," Victoria stated quietly, her voice ringing with absolute, unyielding defiance. "Those documents contain the proof of the murders they committed. Even if you lock me away, copies of these files are already uploading to a secure external server that triggers automatically if my biometric sign-off stops."

Detective Miller’s confident smirk faltered for a fraction of a second, his eyes narrowing dangerously. "You're bluffing."

"Try me," Victoria challenged, taking a bold step forward.

Detective Miller motioned sharply to the officers beside him. "Take her down. Cuff her and take the folder by any means necessary."

Two massive police officers surged forward, lunging at Victoria with heavy plastic zip-ties. Victoria didn't hesitate. She whipped the heavy steel wrench out of her pocket and swung it with brutal, calculated force, catching the first officer squarely across his knee. He shrieked in agony, collapsing hard onto the concrete floor.

The second officer grabbed Victoria by the arm, twisting it violently behind her back. Victoria cried out as pain lanced through her shoulder, but she used her remaining leverage to stomp her heel down onto his foot with all her weight. As he loosened his grip, she wrenched herself free and bolted like a sprinter toward a narrow side loading dock door at the back of the warehouse.

"Shoot her in the leg if you have to! Don't let her leave!" Detective Miller roared in fury.

A deafening gunshot cracked through the warehouse, the bullet shattering a glass window just inches above Victoria's head as she slammed through the side door into the freezing night.
