Chapter 2 - The Red Mark Of Protection

The sharp friction of the silence in the ballroom felt heavier than physical weight. Ten-year-old Leo did not hesitate. His white button-down shirt was slightly rumpled, his black pants dusted with the remnants of a long evening spent hiding near the catering tables. The bright red marks stamped across his left cheek—a vivid, stinging reminder of Eleanor’s heavy-handed discipline from earlier in the evening—burned furiously against his pale skin. He stepped directly into the narrow space between the imposing matriarch and his crying younger sister, his small shoulders squared with fierce, unyielding defiance.
"Leave her alone!" Leo shouted, his voice cracking slightly with the raw panic of a child forced to grow up too fast.
Eleanor’s lips tightened into a thin, bloodless line of absolute fury. Her grip on the little girl's arm did not loosen by a single millimeter. Instead, she tightened her fingers, her perfectly manicured nails pressing dangerously close to the delicate skin of the child's forearm. The assembled guests, draped in designer silks and dripping with heirloom diamonds, shifted uncomfortably in the periphery. Whispers rippled through the golden crowd like a venomous wind, questioning the discipline of the Sterling household, yet no one dared to step forward. Everyone knew the terrifying power Eleanor wielded over the family fortune, and nobody wanted to invite her wrath.
Leo raised his chin higher, refusing to back down despite the terrifying glare the older woman leveled at him. "She was with me the whole time," he lied smoothly, his chest heaving as he protected his sister at all costs. "She didn't take your stupid tiara."
Eleanor let out a cold, venomous laugh that lacked any genuine humor. "Watch your insolent tone, boy," she hissed, her voice a low, dangerous growl meant only for their ears. "You and your sister are nothing more than charity cases under my roof. You eat my food, you wear clothes bought with my money, and now you steal from me? It ends tonight."
The air grew bitterly cold as Eleanor raised her free hand, preparing to teach the defiant boy another harsh lesson across his already bruised face. Leo braced himself, closing his eyes tightly while spreading his arms wider to shield the crying girl behind him.
Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the far end of the ballroom swung open with a resounding crash that rattled every crystal pendant on the chandelier. A sharp, authoritative voice cut through the stifling tension like a razor-sharp blade.
"Don't you dare touch them, Eleanor."
Everyone turned in absolute shock as a tall, striking woman in a sharp navy blue pantsuit strode purposefully through the parting crowd. Her blonde hair was pulled back into a sleek, flawless ponytail, and her eyes burned with an icy, dangerous fury that instantly made the matriarch freeze. It was Victoria, the family’s estranged corporate legal counsel and Eleanor's worst nightmare, holding something heavy hidden inside her tailored jacket.
