Chapter 8

The revelations laid out across the coffee table shifted the gravity in the room entirely. Clara stared down at the genetic profiles and legal memorandums bearing Eleanor Vance’s signature. The documents outlined a cold, calculated plot to declare Clara psychologically unfit within forty-eight hours of giving birth, allowing Eleanor to take full custody of the child and raise him or her as the heir to the Vance estate, completely severing Clara from the bloodline.

“She had the psychological evaluations pre-written months ago,” Harrison explained quietly, keeping his eyes cast downward. “She brought me in to sign off on the cognitive impairment assessments, claiming the stress of high society was breaking Clara’s mind. When Clara resisted, Eleanor escalated the physical intimidation... hoping to break her spirit entirely before the birth.”

Julian’s dark eyes flared with a lethal intensity. The fury that had driven him to dismantle the family empire now felt entirely justified, yet insufficient for the depth of his mother’s malice. He looked at Clara, whose hands were resting gently over her stomach, tears brimming in her eyes not from fear, but from the chilling realization of how close she had come to losing everything.

“Thank you for bringing these documents, Harrison,” Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm. “They’ll make a fine addition to the federal corruption case currently being processed by the district attorney.”

Harrison looked up, shock crossing his weathered face. “You’re... you’re still handing these over to the prosecutors? I thought coming here and telling you the truth might...”

“Might buy you immunity?” Julian finished for him, walking over to stand directly in front of the doctor. “You watched a pregnant woman being tortured on a marble floor and offered professional justification for it. You don’t get a free pass just because the ship is sinking. Get out of my penthouse before I let federal marshals pick you up here.”

Harrison stood up slowly, realizing the limits of his bargaining power. He grabbed his empty briefcase, walked toward the private elevator, and disappeared behind the sliding glass doors without another word.

Julian turned back to Clara, kneeling beside her chair and taking her bandaged hands gently in his. “You are never going to be subjected to their control again, Clara. I promise you that with every breath I take.”

“I know,” she whispered, leaning down to rest her forehead against his. “We won. The empire is gone, and we’re free.”

“Not quite yet,” Julian said softly. “There’s one final loose end to tie up before we can truly leave the past behind.”
