Chapter 12

The rhythmic, steady pulse of the fetal monitor filled the quiet study, echoing off the wooden bookshelves like a drumbeat of life and renewal. Dr. Reed smiled broadly as she adjusted the Doppler sensor across Clara’s abdomen, listening intently to the clear, strong rhythm.

“Heart rate is perfect, active, and strong,” Dr. Reed announced, packing the sensor back into her case. “Everything indicates a healthy, full-term delivery within the next few weeks. Clara, your vitals are stable, and your stress levels are practically non-existent compared to when we first met at the penthouse.”

“That’s entirely thanks to the coastal air and zero corporate board meetings,” Julian joked lightly, standing beside the sofa with his hand resting gently on Clara’s shoulder.

Dr. Reed chuckled, closing her bag and standing up. “Well, keep doing whatever you’re doing. I’ll check in again next week, but honestly, you two are the most boringly healthy patients on my roster—and I mean that as the highest possible compliment.”

Julian walked the doctor to the front door, thanking her before returning to Clara’s side. He sat on the edge of the sofa, gently placing his hand over Clara’s belly, feeling the distinct movement of their child pressing against his palm.

“He’s going to be a soccer player or a marathon runner,” Julian murmured with a soft smile.

Clara laughed, running her fingers through his messy dark hair. “Or maybe just a quiet kid who likes reading books by the ocean.”

“Either way, he’ll have choices,” Julian said earnestly. “He’ll never have to worry about family names, corporate empires, or proving his worth to people who measure human value in stock shares.”

“Do you ever miss it?” Clara asked softly, searching his face. “The city, the influence, the power?”

Julian shook his head without a moment of hesitation. “Power built on fear is just a cage in disguise, Clara. The only power I ever wanted was the right to protect the people I love, and I have that right here, every single day.”

The sun began to dip toward the horizon, painting the ocean in brilliant shades of orange and deep purple. They sat together in comfortable silence, watching the waves roll onto the shore, knowing that the ghosts of the Vance estate could no longer reach them across this vast expanse of peace.
