Chapter 10

The morning air smelled of salt and distant pine as Julian and Clara stood on the private balcony of a coastal estate three hundred miles away from the city. The sprawling concrete canyons and glittering skyscrapers of the financial district were now just a distant memory, replaced by the endless expanse of the blue ocean crashing against rugged cliffs.
Clara wore a loose, flowing beige dress that concealed the bandages on her hands, which were healing steadily under Dr. Reed’s careful supervision. Her brown hair caught the morning breeze as she leaned against the balcony railing, taking a deep breath of the clean, unpolluted air.
Julian stepped out from the glass sliding doors, carrying two mugs of freshly brewed coffee. He handed one to Clara, wrapping his arm around her waist and pulling her close against his side.
“The final liquidation papers were signed by the bankruptcy trustee this morning,” Julian said softly, resting his chin gently on her shoulder. “The estate is officially dissolved, and the holding accounts have been completely purged of all illicit funds. What’s left has been placed into an independent trust fund dedicated to charitable foundations supporting victims of corporate abuse.”
Clara looked up at him, a radiant smile breaking across her face—the first truly unburdened smile Julian had ever seen from her. “So it’s really over? They can never touch us again?”
“It’s over,” Julian confirmed, kissing the top of her head. “We are entirely free. No boards of directors, no family trusts, no security details watching our every move. Just us.”
Clara placed her hand over her swelling stomach, feeling a gentle kick from the baby within. “He’s going to grow up knowing what freedom feels like, Julian. Not fear, not servitude.”
“That’s all I ever wanted,” Julian whispered, his dark eyes filled with a deep, abiding peace.

Down below on the private beach, seabirds wheeled gracefully above the surf, riding the rising thermals of the morning wind. The ghost of the crystal foyer, the metal bowl of soapy water, and the cold tyranny of the Vance estate felt like a lifetime ago, washed away by the tide of their new beginning.
They spent the morning walking along the shore, leaving footprints in the wet sand that were quickly washed clean by the incoming waves, symbolizing a past completely erased and a future entirely their own to write.
