Chapter 1

The crystal chandelier above the grand foyer cast cold, fractured light across marble floors that had witnessed decades of aristocratic cruelty. Julian Vance burst through the heavy double mahogany doors, his chest heaving beneath his sharp black suit and tie. His intense dark eyes locked onto a scene that made his blood run cold. Across the expansive room, his mother, Eleanor Vance, stood with posture as rigid as iron. She loomed over Clara, Julian’s young wife, who was forced onto her knees beside a large metal bowl filled with soapy water. Clara’s brown hair fell in matted strands around a face bearing ugly purple bruises, and her beige dress was stained with dirt and exhaustion.

“Scrub harder, you parasite!” Eleanor commanded, her voice cutting through the silent, oppressive air of the ancestral estate like a razor blade.

Clara’s hands, already raw and bleeding, moved frantically through the thick white foam inside the metal bowl. Beside Eleanor stood Dr. Harrison, an older man with immaculate white hair and a crisp white doctor’s coat, holding a silver medical instrument. He watched the humiliation with detached clinical indifference, his expression shifting to utter shock as Julian closed the distance between them.

Julian rushed forward furiously, his stride eating up the marble floor. “Don’t touch my wife!” he shouted, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings.

Dr. Harrison stepped back in surprise, dropping his medical pen against the tile. Clara’s hands kept scrubbing inside the soapy water, driven by a terror that had been beaten into her during months of isolation within these walls. Julian dropped to his knees, ignoring the immaculate fabric of his suit as it touched the dirty floor. He reached out, gently but firmly stopping her trembling hands from tearing further into her own skin.

He pulled Clara up from the floor, using his strength to support her weight and instinctively shielding her pregnant belly with his arm. He glared at Eleanor, the fury in his eyes burning hot enough to melt glass. He reached inside his black suit jacket, his hand closing around a small piece of heavy cardstock hidden in his pocket.

“We are leaving this house right now!” Julian said firmly, his voice dropping an octave into a dangerous register.

He stared intensely into Eleanor’s eyes, holding the small black card up so she could see the embossed silver lettering of his private corporate security and asset liquidation firm. He delivered the ultimatum that would change their lives forever.

“You have 15 hours before your empire burns to the ground.”
