Chapter 6

By noon, the collapse of Vance Enterprises was no longer just a financial story; it was a media spectacle dominating every major news network across the country. Headlines flashed across television screens in cafes, airports, and living rooms: Vance Conglomerate Plummets Amid Federal Fraud Probe; Dynasty Faces Imminent Liquidation.
Inside the secure sanctuary of Julian’s penthouse, the television hummed quietly in the background as news anchors reported on the sudden downfall of the corporate titan. Clara sat on the sofa, watching the footage with a mixture of awe and lingering apprehension. The sheer scale of Julian’s retribution was breathtaking, yet the ghosts of the estate still lingered in the quiet corners of her mind.
Julian sat across from her at the modern dining table, reviewing encrypted legal documents sent over by his personal counsel. He looked up, noticing the tension in Clara’s shoulders, and immediately set his tablet aside to walk over to her.
“You don’t have to watch them, Clara,” Julian said gently, sitting beside her on the sofa and pulling her into the warmth of his embrace.
“I’m just trying to realize that it’s real,” she murmured, leaning her head against his shoulder. “For so long, your family made me feel like they were the entire world—that there was nowhere on earth I could hide from their reach. Now watching them fall apart on national television feels almost surreal.”
“They built their world on quicksand,” Julian replied, his voice steady and calm. “Every acquisition was forced, every competitor was crushed through intimidation, and every dissenting voice was bought off or silenced. Empires built on cruelty always collapse the moment someone refuses to be afraid anymore.”
A soft chime echoed from the secure intercom near the entryway. Julian’s expression hardened slightly. He stood up, walking over to check the high-definition security monitor by the door. Standing outside the private elevator lobby on their floor was Marcus Vance, looking desperate and defeated, holding a leather briefcase.
Julian pressed the audio link. “You wasted your time coming here, Marcus. Turn around and get back to your sinking ship.”
“Julian, please, just give me five minutes,” Marcus pleaded through the intercom speaker, his voice cracking with panic. “Aunt Eleanor has suffered a mild ischemic attack. The board is in total mutiny, and the federal investigators are moving into the penthouse office right now. If you don’t sign the emergency injunction release, the entire estate—including personal trust assets—will be seized.”
Julian looked back at Clara, who was watching him with wide, cautious eyes. He pressed the button again. “Let the estate be seized, Marcus. Let every brick of that house be sold off to pay back the people Mother exploited over the decades. I won’t sign a single paper to save her.”

“Julian! She’s your mother!” Marcus shouted, his composure completely shattering.
“My mother died the day she ordered my wife to scrub marble floors with her bare hands,” Julian replied coldly, cutting the audio feed and locking down the elevator override permanently.
