Chapter 2

The cold night air hit Clara like a physical blow as Julian guided her past the towering iron gates of the Vance estate. The sleek black luxury sedan waited at the curb, its engine idling quietly. Julian opened the passenger door with meticulous care, ensuring Clara was safely inside before sliding into the driver’s seat. He didn’t look back at the sprawling mansion that had been his childhood prison and his wife’s recent torture chamber. His jaw was locked tight, every muscle in his face strained with suppressed rage and a deep, aching sorrow.
Clara stared down at her bruised hands, which throbbed in the dim dashboard light. The scent of harsh industrial soap still clung to her skin, mixing with the metallic tang of dried blood. She wrapped her arms protectively around her stomach, shivering despite the car’s aggressive heater.
“You’re safe now, Clara,” Julian said softly, his voice losing its boardroom edge as he glanced sideways at her. “I’m sorry it took me this long to break through their security network. They cut off your phone on my first day out of the country.”
Clara turned her dark, haunted eyes toward him. “They said I didn’t belong in this family, Julian. Your mother... she said the baby was a mistake, an impurity that needed to be scrubbed away.”
Julian gripped the steering wheel so hard his knuckles turned white. “My mother cares about nothing except the Vance family name and our real estate holdings. When she found out you were pregnant with our child, she saw a threat to her control. But her reign of terror ends tonight. I’ve spent the last three years building a separate empire of my own, entirely off the books, waiting for the precise leverage I needed to tear her corporation apart from the inside out.”
The car sped down the coastal highway, the dark ocean crashing against the cliffs below. Julian drove toward his private penthouse in the city center, a neutral territory protected by biometric locks and loyal security personnel who answered only to him.
Once inside the minimalist, warm-toned apartment, Julian immediately called for a private physician he trusted implicitly. Dr. Evelyn Reed arrived within twenty minutes, her expression professional and compassionate as she examined Clara’s injuries. She cleaned the raw skin on Clara’s hands, applied soothing ointments, and performed a gentle ultrasound to check on the baby.
The rhythmic, steady beat of the fetal heartbeat filled the quiet room, bringing the first genuine tear of relief to Clara’s eyes. Julian stood by the bed, his hand resting gently on Clara’s shoulder, anchoring her to reality.

“Mother and baby are both stable, though exhausted and undernourished,” Dr. Reed reported quietly, packing her bag. “She needs complete rest, proper nutrition, and zero stress.”
Julian nodded, walking the doctor to the door before returning to the bedside. He looked at Clara, who was finally drifting into a peaceful sleep, safe from the horrors of the estate. But the clock was ticking down from fifteen hours, and Julian had a massive storm to unleash.
