Chapter 8 - The Hidden Envelope

Arthur turned around slowly, holding a thick, manila envelope stamped with an unfamiliar legal firm’s logo. The paper was slightly yellowed with age, bearing a timestamp from nearly twenty years ago—long before Elena and Arthur had even been married.
“It’s a birth certificate,” Arthur said, his voice barely above a whisper. He walked over and placed the heavy envelope on the coffee table between Margaret and Clara. “And adoption papers from a private clinic in upstate New York.”
Margaret felt the blood drain rapidly from her face. The calm, composed demeanor she had maintained throughout the entire evening suddenly fractured. Her breath caught in her throat, and she stared at the manila envelope as if it were a venomous snake coiled upon the wood.
“Where... where did you find this?” Margaret asked, her voice uncharacteristically shaky.
“At the very bottom of her locked filing cabinet, hidden beneath her jewelry boxes,” Arthur replied, watching his mother’s reaction with deep concern. “Mother, you look like you’ve seen a ghost. What is this document? Whose name is on it?”
Clara leaned forward, reaching out to touch the corner of the envelope. “Grandma? Do you know what this is?”
Margaret closed her eyes for a long, agonizing moment, memories she had buried deep beneath decades of grief and survival rushing violently back to the surface. She had thought that chapter of her life was safely locked away forever, guarded by time and distance. But Elena, in her obsessive need for control and leverage, had dug it up.
“Open it, Arthur,” Margaret whispered, her eyes opening to reveal a profound, sorrowful depth. “Read it out loud.”
Arthur carefully slid his thumb under the metal clasp of the envelope, pulling out several heavy sheets of official paper. He scanned the dense legal jargon at the top, his brow furrowing in confusion. He shifted his gaze to the names listed in the primary guardian and child sections. As the words registered in his brain, the color completely drained from his face, and the papers fluttered limply from his trembling fingers onto the table.

“This... this doesn't make any sense,” Arthur stammered, looking frantically between his mother and the document. “Mother... according to these papers, Elena didn't just find us by accident twenty years ago. She was hired by someone to infiltrate this family.”
