Chapter 7 - The Final Departure

Elena let out a harsh, mocking laugh that lacked any genuine humor. She shifted the heavy luggage in her grip, stepping fully into the study.

“You think you can just throw me away like some broken appliance?” Elena challenged, pointing a manicured finger directly at Arthur. “Without my connections, your firm will drop you before the end of the quarter. I built your social calendar, Arthur! I made you who you are!”

“No, Elena,” Arthur replied coldly, finally closing his laptop with a sharp snap that echoed loudly in the silent room. He stood up to his full height, looking down at his soon-to-be-ex-wife with absolute indifference. “You made me a prisoner in my own life. That ends tonight.”

Elena stared at him, searching his face for any sign of hesitation, any flicker of the weak, pliable husband she had manipulated for two decades. Finding nothing but cold resolve, her mask finally cracked entirely. Her lower lip trembled slightly, and for a brief second, a flash of genuine panic crossed her features. But pride quickly rushed in to fill the void.

“You’ll regret this,” she whispered fiercely, turning on her heel with a sharp click of her designer heels. “All of you will.”

The heavy front door swung open, and the sharp sound of her suitcases rolling down the front steps pierced the night air. A moment later, the engine of her luxury SUV roared to life, tires screeching against the asphalt as she sped away into the darkness, leaving the estate in profound, ringing silence.

Clara let out a long, shaky breath, her shoulders sagging as if a heavy physical weight had finally been lifted from her back.

“Is it really over?” Clara asked quietly, looking up at her grandmother.

“No, sweetheart,” Margaret replied, walking over to sit beside her granddaughter on the sofa. She took Clara’s cold hands in her own weathered palms. “It isn't over. It’s just the beginning. Now, we get to rebuild this home on a foundation of honesty.”

Arthur walked over to the window, staring out into the empty driveway where the smoke from the fire pit still drifted lazily into the night sky.

“There’s something else we need to discuss,” Arthur said quietly, not turning around. “Something I found in Elena’s locked desk drawer while looking for the bank records.”

Margaret raised an eyebrow, sensing the sudden shift in the room’s atmosphere. “What did you find, Arthur?”
