Chapter 6 - The Midnight Audit

The interior of the house was brightly lit, casting long, stark shadows through the expansive floor-to-ceiling windows. Arthur sat at the heavy oak dining table in the study, his laptop glowing brightly in the dark room. The screen displayed dozens of bank statements, offshore transfer receipts, and alarming red-lettered overdue notices from the mortgage company. Every click of the mouse revealed a new layer of deception.

Margaret stood quietly by the bookshelf, watching her son process the financial devastation his wife had inflicted upon their lives. Clara sat on the velvet sofa nearby, nervously twisting a silver bracelet around her wrist.

“She transferred over four hundred thousand dollars to personal boutique accounts in the Cayman Islands over the last four years,” Arthur muttered, his voice hollow and detached. He looked up at his mother, the profound shame etched deeply into the lines around his mouth. “How did I not see this, Mother? How was I so blind?”

“Because you wanted to believe in the illusion she was selling, Arthur,” Margaret answered gently, walking over to place a comforting hand on his stoic shoulder. “Elena wrapped herself in designer labels and high-society charm because she was terrified of who she really was underneath. Wealth and status were her armor. Unfortunately, she was willing to destroy everyone around her to keep polishing that armor.”

From down the long hallway, the sound of slamming doors and hurried footsteps echoed through the quiet house. Elena was packing. Drawers were being yanked open and slammed shut with reckless abandon, followed by the heavy thud of designer suitcases hitting the hardwood floor.

Clara flinched at every loud crash, burying her face slightly in her hands. “Is she really leaving?”

“She has nowhere else to go that will maintain her lifestyle,” Margaret noted astutely. “People like Elena cannot survive without an audience and a benefactor. Now that Arthur has cut off the funds and frozen the accounts, her world is collapsing.”

The study door swung open violently. Elena stood in the doorway, dressed in a sharp black travel blazer and dark sunglasses, despite it being well past midnight. She clutched two large leather weekenders in her hands, her jaw clenched tight with rage.

“I hope you’re all happy,” Elena sneered, her voice dripping with toxic venom as she looked between her husband, her daughter, and her mother-in-law. “You’ve successfully destroyed a family over petty bitterness and an old woman’s grudge.”

Arthur didn't even look up from his laptop screen. “The divorce papers will be waiting on your lawyer’s desk by morning, Elena. Don't bother calling the house.”
