Chapter 14 - The Final Reckoning

“Well, well, well,” Richard said, his voice raspy and dripping with decades of pure, unadulterated malice. He stepped past the two armed operatives, leaning heavily on an obsidian-handled cane as he surveyed the ruined study. “It seems the old matriarch is still trying to play protector.”

Margaret stepped forward, planting her iron poker firmly against the hardwood floor. She did not cower. She looked directly into the eyes of the man who had tried to destroy her family twice over forty years.

“You always were a parasite, Richard,” Margaret said, her voice cutting through the tense air with icy precision. “You couldn't build anything of your own, so you spent your entire life trying to steal what others built through honest work.”

Richard chuckled darkly, waving a dismissive hand at his armed guards. “Honest work? Margaret, this world doesn't belong to the honest. It belongs to those willing to take what they want. And tonight, every square inch of this estate—and every offshore account your son foolishly tied to his business—reverts to Vanguard Holdings.”

“You’re too late, Richard,” Arthur spoke up, keeping his voice steady as he held the satellite phone tightly behind his back. “Federal marshals were notified the moment you crossed the property line. They’re less than a minute away.”

Richard’s smug smile faltered for a fraction of a second before he let out another harsh laugh. “Federal marshals? Let them come. By the time they breach these gates, this entire house will be a pile of ash. Just like that foolish little birthday party out on the patio.”

Richard gestured to the operative on his left, who pulled a small, heavy metal canister from his tactical vest—an incendiary phosphorus grenade designed to consume an entire room in seconds.

Margaret’s eyes widened slightly as she recognized the device. Without a moment’s hesitation, she lunged forward with the iron poker, swinging it with all her remaining strength directly at the operative’s wrist. The heavy iron struck home with a sharp crack, and the incendiary canister slipped from the guard’s gloved hand, clattering loudly onto the wooden floor right at Richard’s feet.
