Chapter 10 - The Unpaid Debt

Arthur picked up the adoption and employment contracts from the table, examining the corporate letterhead at the top of the second page. The logo was faded, but the company name was still starkly legible: Vanguard Holdings, LLC.
“Vanguard Holdings,” Arthur muttered, squinting at the name. “Wait a minute. That’s the firm that tried to execute a hostile takeover of my company three years ago. The one we successfully fought off in federal court.”
Margaret nodded slowly. “It’s all connected, Arthur. The corporate attacks, the financial bleeding, the forced isolation from our old friends and relatives—it was all part of a long-term campaign designed to bankrupt our family, destroy your career, and force us to sell this estate for pennies on the dollar.”
“And the mastermind behind Vanguard Holdings is none other than—” Arthur stopped, his blood running cold as a familiar name flashed in his memory. He looked up at his mother with sudden horror. “Uncle Richard.”
Margaret’s silence confirmed his worst fear. Uncle Richard—Arthur’s estranged uncle who had been legally disowned by Margaret’s late husband forty years ago over corporate fraud and embezzlement. Richard had vanished abroad decades ago, swearing vengeance on the family.
“He’s been dead for years, hasn't he?” Arthur asked desperately, praying for confirmation.
“People like Richard don't die easily, Arthur,” Margaret said grimly. “They just change their names, offshore their assets, and hire desperate young women like Elena to do their dirty work from the shadows.”
Clara shivered, pulling her cardigan tighter around herself. “So Elena wasn't just running away from a failed marriage tonight. She was running back to her handler.”
“Which means she’ll be heading straight to Richard’s estate on the coast,” Arthur concluded, his jaw clenching with fierce determination. He reached for his phone, dialing a number with rapid, practiced efficiency. “I’m calling federal authorities. I have enough financial records and legal documentation right here on this desk to warrant an immediate investigation into Vanguard Holdings and interstate fraud.”
Before Arthur’s finger could hit the call button, the power throughout the entire house suddenly flickered and died. The glowing computer screen went black, plunging the study into absolute, suffocating darkness.

Outside, the security floodlights clicked off one by one, leaving only the dying embers of the outdoor fire pit casting long, erratic shadows across the French doors.
