Chapter 5 - The Daughter’s Awakening

Clara pushed the glass door open all the way, stepping out into the cold night air. The birthday tiara she wore felt heavy and foolish atop her head. She looked at her mother with eyes devoid of any lingering childhood adoration.
“You used my college money?” Clara asked, her voice cracking painfully. “The money Grandma Margaret put aside for me since the day I was born? You spent it on bags?”
Elena’s expression faltered for a fraction of a second as she looked at her daughter. For all of Elena’s superficial narcissism, she had always expected Clara to follow blindly in her footsteps, marrying into wealth and maintaining the illusion of perfection. But the look in Clara’s eyes now was pure, unadulterated disgust.
“Clara, sweetheart, listen to me,” Elena began, stepping forward with her hands outstretched in a conciliatory gesture. “Your mother was under an immense amount of pressure. Society is brutal, darling. You’ll understand when you’re older. It’s a dog-eat-dog world out there, and I had to protect our family’s position.”
“Stop talking!” Clara yelled, her voice echoing off the brick walls of the house. She reached up, tore the sparkling tiara from her hair, and hurled it across the patio. It bounced off the mahogany dining table, right into the spilled yellow cake. “You didn't protect anything! You destroyed everything! You ruined my birthday, you treat Grandma like dirt, and you lied to Dad for years!”
Margaret watched the interaction with a heavy, aching heart. She took a few steps forward, bridging the physical distance between herself and her granddaughter. She gently placed a warm, steady hand on Clara’s trembling shoulder.
“You don't have to bear any of this burden, Clara,” Margaret said softly, her voice a soothing anchor in the storm. “Your college fund is safe. It was never in that account. I moved it to a secure trust three years ago, the moment I saw the first warning signs.”
Elena whipped her head around, her eyes bulging with renewed fury and shock. “You what? You hid the money?”
“I protected my granddaughter’s future from a thief,” Margaret replied calmly, meeting Elena’s furious gaze without a single hint of fear.
Arthur slowly lowered his hands from his face. The grief in his expression had transformed into cold, calculated resolve. He walked past his wife without sparing her a single glance, heading straight toward the front entrance of the house.
“Where are you going?” Elena demanded, panic rising in her throat once more.

“I’m calling a lawyer, Elena,” Arthur said, not breaking his stride. “And then I’m calling the movers.”
